Good Music but poor theology

From the moment of the first bars of the Overture, you know your in Lloyd Webber territory. All the signs are there - odd time signatures, keyboard based composing which makes it almost impossible for poor guitarists to play along, but tunes that stick in the brain and nail Tim Rice's words home like nothing else. It even has the equivalent of Joseph's Pharaoh's song in 'Herod's song' - comical and quirky. 'I don't know how to love him' was the single from the original production and still retains its power in even in a post 'Da Vinci Code' world! Yes - this is Rice and Webber at their musical best. It's just such a shame that they get Jesus wrong. This 'Superstar' Jesus is unfocussed, driven by powers outside himself and, of course, ultimately a failure. It is Judas who is the hero of this opera - Judas who 'sees it all clearly now', Judas who is ultimately betrayed by God and condemned to an unjust death. And of course, this is perfectly fair - if you leave out one fact. Without the resurrection, Jesus is just a failure. That's why there's not even a hint of the central Christian claim in this musical. Because if Jesus really did beat death and rise to new life, then his death is somehow 'accredited' by God - and what he says about life after death has to be taken seriously, and this obviously conflicts with the authors' views. But what if ....? Something as deeply subversive as resurrection is dynamite - that's why the early Christians took the ancient world by storm.

The Best!

After seeing this version of what can only be described as the best ALW musical in the world, I can only say that it is ....Simply The Best! Steve Bolsamo and Zubin Varla are truly inspired choices for the roles of Jesu and Judas and who would have thought that Alice Cooper woul ever be agood Herod? Surprisingly it works and it worked live on stage too! Though perhaps the 'religious' amongst us would disagree with the themes and the plot, I think we have to keep in mind that this is an interpretation. It's musical theatre! It's not meant to be real. The emphasis in this particular adaptation of the plot is strongly placed with Judas. A different way to look at the story! Judas is mainly a narrator (as per Joseph!!!!!) telling the story through his eyes. A fabulous piece of ALW mastermind! ROCK ON!!!!

Impressive

This is probably one of the "must haves" in i-Tunes nowadays. Good songs include "Judas' Death" , "Hosanna" , "This Jesus Must Die" and, in my opinion, the best, "King Herod's Song".

Andrew Lloyd Webber (b. 1948) is the most successful composer of musicals of his generation and also a breaker of molds for the type. His predecessors were, for the most part, American: New York-based songwriters steeped in Broadway tradition. Lloyd Webber saw his share of shows as a child, too, but he was born in London, the son of William Lloyd Webber, Director of the London College...
