Album Review

When the Feeling first appeared in 2006 with Twelve Stops and Home, they were pop/rock architects wielding the proper tools (harmony vocals, organs, and tight songcraft) to build a fine shrine to ELO and Supertramp. Two years later, Join with Us shows the five bandmates mixing strong power pop songs with a scoop of melodrama and the occasional pinch of musical absurdity. For starters, there's a show-stopping sax solo in the middle of "Won't Go Away," an embellishment that turns the song into something from a 1980s movie soundtrack (think Rob Lowe blowing his horn during St. Elmo's Fire, minus the dangly earring). Elsewhere, the surplus of theatrical soft pop (no matter how well-crafted) doesn't pack the same appeal as the energetic numbers that dominated the band's debut. Thankfully, several standout tracks still pepper this set list, and "I Thought It Was Over" nimbly opens the album with disco beats, twinkling piano arpeggios, harmonized guitar leads, and one of the band's best bridges to date. Later, the lively mood continues with the bouncy title track (featuring a call-and-answer chorus sung mostly in falsetto) and "Turn It Up," a Queen-sized romp that is unabashedly grandiose and, as a result, all the more appealing. [This edition released in Japan includes bonus tracks.]

Customer Reviews

Just something little missing from a great album...

I really liked the first album and managed to see them on tour so was so excited to get the new album, even got the deluxe version. Its worth it for 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. Now this album is just missing a bit of magic that they had on the last album, no way is it second album syndrome it just lacks a magic track as most have the same touch. I really like 'Join with us' and 'Loneliness' amongst a few others. But just a bit of The Feeling magic they can do so well is floating off..... I guess as the song says 'Wont go away' they won't. Thats why I could nto give them 5 stars..

Can't wait...

It's great that iTunes had this album available before everyone else but this deluxe version....it's only £9.98 on Amazon. Come on iTunes, drop this version to a better price, especially since it's a download.

Join With Us - Will It Be 12 Stops & Home For The Feeling??

Join with us the hugely anticipated follow up to the massively successful 12 stops and home, promises to deliver more of the same and more. Anyone expecting to find "hook catchy" tracks such as "Sewn, Never Be Lonely and Strange" had better look elsewhere, as none of the new tracks bay "i thought it was over" even come close to emulating the success of their previous tracks. That said the second album takes a more downbeat mood with tracks such as "spare me" and "conor", which are pulled off effortlessly. Fans of the albums first single "i thought it was over" will find few simular tracks themselves a little alienated, instead they are greeted with a warm selection of mid tempo tunes. This will not appeal to the mass audience, but avid Feeling fans will be content with the offerings of the album.
