iTunes Review

Those who associate Kelis only with bitch-is-back singles such as “Milkshake” and “Caught Out There” have slept on a handful of the best R&B full-lengths of the past decade. Her fourth, Kelis Was Here, again integrates enticing takes on ’70s soul with popping neo-electro cuts – the latter recalling mentors the Neptunes in their absence, a first for a Kelis album. Her boss-lady persona is accounted for on, well, “Bossy,” while she flips it in a variety of moods, from the submissive yet wriggly “Blindfold Me” to the vows of devotion in “Till the Wheels Fall Off” and “Living Proof.” Guest Will.i.am produces two songs, including “What’s That Right There,” which matches his obsession with female bodies (his own Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps”) with Kelis’ sly sass. (She’s credited with co-writing a dozen tracks here.) Her command of voice, moods and irresistible melody brings Kelis Was Here an appeal that doesn’t stop over its hour-plus length.

Where did all the SOUL go?

I saw Kelis live just after her Tasty album was released. She was full of energy, funk and soul performing hits like Trick Me, Milkshake and Keep It Down. What on earth has happened? The songs from Kelis Was Here are horrible empty beat vessels with no melody or structure. I never thought Kelis would sell out and sound like that screeching girl from Black Eyed Peas - yes, Bossy reminds me of that hideous My Humps song the Peas tortured us with not long ago. I thought Kelis was better than this! I won't be buying any of her new songs. I considered myself a fan but I won't be seeing her live again if this is all she can come up with. I think previous reviewers who love this album have either short term memory loss (with regard to forgetting how superior Tasty is) or they just don't know what Kelis is capable of. She was unique before but now she sounds like the other cardboard cut out 'rnb' stars. How disappointing to hear meaningless fluff from her.... Like You should be a certified torture technique.

And You Thought 'Tasty' Was Good

1 word.....stunning.... an awesome comibination of rnb and perfect pop which is ok to like......believe me dont be ashamed its ok to love it fellow rock lovers.........i don't know what it is about Kelis but anyone whose a fan of rock goddess' such as Courtney Love Shirley Manson Brody Dalle and Gwen Stefani totally seem to like Kelis (they just keep a secret lol). If you have to listen or download any song you must listen to Don't Think So it is a general rock song fronted by an amazing smooth and sexy soul woman with amazing talent and style. And an incredible CD cover................

In A League Of Her Own

Kelis Was Here in one word is AMAZING and a great follow-up to Tasty. No longer working with the Neptunes, Kelis never follows trends and the album is a great mix of r n'b, pop, hip-hop and rock. Favourites include Bossy, Blindfold Me, Fire, Triology, Aww S***!, What's That Right There, Living Proof & the P!nk sounding I Don't Think So.. Love her flow on Circus, the classical sounds of Like You and the will.i.am jem Weekend which makes me reminisce of Finest Dreams with Richard X. Not bad for 18 traks and the rest are good as well. Also if u purchase the cd u get a hidden track called F*** Them B*****s, which is another jem and a fierce cover of one of the most popular under rated artist!

Harlem-bred vocalist Kelis left her parents' home at 16 and landed a deal with Virgin four years later. In mid-1999, Kelis was singing alongside rap troublemaker Ol' Dirty Bastard on his cut "Got Your Money," and her signature Technicolor-spiraled Afro sparked critics' interest. Kelis captured feminist desires on her debut, Kaleidoscope, released in December 1999. Two years later, she teamed up with the Neptunes once again for Wanderland.
