iTunes Review

Four years after Some Cities, Doves return triumphant with the heavy, epic rumbling sound of Kingdom of Rust. The trio's penchant for minor chords and reverb-heavy production drapes the new album in overcast, moderately melancholy tones, and an underlining theme of movement and travel affords their fourth album a kinetic aesthetic. On opening track, “Jetstream”, frontman Jimi Goodwin sings about catching a drift on a troubled dream as the instrumentation gradually creates the feeling of dislocated movement — with the eventual appearance of stomping drums, cascading electronic.s and an effective, minimal guitar riff. Hints of woozy psychedelia color “10:03”, which starts like Coldplay-meets-Glasvegas and ends with a thundering U2-inspired groove, and the trio is occasionally accompanied by violin and cello (“Kingdom of Rust”, “Birds Flew Backwards”) for swirling, orchestral atmospherics.

Wasn't expecting THAT.

Having never listened to a Doves album - or even a single song for that matter - I was even more curious to find out what Doves had to say for themselves through their music. I bought the album out of interest and curiosity not knowing what to expect. And all I can say is that this has been money WELL SPENT. By the end of it all, I'd been blown away by what I'd heard. Never have I heard such an unfamiliar band put so much time, effort and raw emotion into an album of this genre. The way that each song is layered so delicately and executed so well, makes you attracted to it on first listen and then drags you in even more the second time as you discover things and hear things you hadn't noticed the first time. Every song has its neat, catchy signature sound, but as a collective, the album produces none other than an astonishing raw power of sound that not only catches you by the ear, but catches you by the soul too - something which nowadays, very few British bands are able to accomplish so successfully as this. Favourites on the album have to be 'Kingdom of Rust', 'Winter Hill', 'Compulsion' & 'House of Mirrors'. And I'll say it again - best buy of 2009 for me without a shadow of a doubt.

Worth the 4 year wait.

Don't want to ramble on and on about how amazingly good this album is..but this is a clear contender for album of the year and certainly the best british album of this year so far. This is beautiful, epic ,uplifting music in the manor of Radiohead, Elbow or Sigur Ros.. my favourite tracks so far are Jetstream, Kingdom of Rust and Winter Hill, although there's not a bad song on here. If there were any justice in the over-bloated, talantless, repetitive and just plain uninspiring music industry that exists today- Doves would be one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Best album since Verve Urban Hymns. This is real once-in-a-decade stuff.

This is exceptional music-making, quite simply the best album I've heard in years. Some great hooks. No weak tracks on the whole album – buy the lot. One moment you think you're being led off down some electronic by-way reminiscent of OK Computer era Radiohead, then with a crash of bass there's a pumping U2-like arena anthem somehow growing out of the first theme. A few excursions through a Coldplay-like sound (thankfully without the whining tone...) and then it all resolves itself somewhere in a sonic territory somewhere between the Verve's Urban Hymns and (faintly) Pink Floyd, with a (fainter still) echo of Oasis classics. Plenty of minor key stuff, but the band doesn't shy away from thumping great resolutions into the major to very uplifting effect. But don't let all the references give the impression that this superb album is derivative or just a melange of sampling. It isn't, it's a highly original work of the highest quality that demands listening over and over again. It plays and creatively intertwines a wide and rich set of influences and produces something new. It's brilliant. I cannot praise this highly enough.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Before embracing Brit-pop in the late '90s, Doves' three members — vocalist/bassist Jimi Goodwin, guitarist Jez Williams, and drummer Andy Williams — figured prominently in the Madchester scene, where they scored a Top Five single as part of the dance combo Sub Sub. "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" peaked at number three in the U.K., but Sub Sub failed to produce any significant follow-up hits, and a fire destroyed their recording studio in February 1995. After taking several years to restructure...
