iTunes Review
One of the best albums released in 2003, Kish Kash is Basement Jaxx's consummate funkified house record. South London production duo Simon Ratcliff and Felix Buxton assemble a 14-song party complete with A-list guests for their third full-length effort. Dizzee Rascal's raps erupt over Middle-Eastern grooves on "Lucky Star," while Meshell Ndegeocello sizzles on "Right Here's The Spot" and the sensual "Feels Like Home." Though *Nsync's JC Chasez seems an odd guess, his Thriller-on-ecstasy approach to "Plug It In" is a welcome addition. The album houses downbeat rhythms like the Ratcliff-fronted "If I Ever Recover" next to Siouxsie Sioux's high-octane delivery of "Cish Cash." Even the London Session Orchestra stops by for a few string appearances. Despite the album's many disparate elements, the album feels like a cohesive whole. Like any good soirŽe, inviting interesting guests adds color to the mix. Throw in the innovative arrangements of Basement Jaxx and it's an event that lingers, pleasingly, long after the party's over.
Customer Reviews
Ooh very, very good.
What is it with this Singles collection? Not only do you not get a good insight into some of the brilliant album tracks, but you don't even get the full versions of the singles! Every Jaxx album is great but my personal favourite is 2003's Kish Kash. You'd have probably heard the singles from this. There's the incessantly catchy Plug It In, complete with JC Chasez's falsetto "I saw you crying in the rain / With the tears running down running down your face". Lucky Star, featuring Mercury winner Dizzee Rascal in an indian-sounding tune, Buxton and Radcliffe pulling in sitars and pumping basslines to keep you dancing. That's not even mentioning the string-drenched, staccato-beated opener Good Luck with Lisa Kekaula from the Bellrays. Imagine what would be playing on the radio in heaven? You wouldn't be too far off from this. If that doesn't float your boat, then don't buy the album, but on top of that, Basement Jaxx hire in Siouxsie Sioux for the driving, electro Cish Cash and Phoebe for a mediterrean serenade entitled Tonight, probably the closest thing to Rendez-Vu they'll ever do again. It's also nice to hear the soundscape of two geniuses, If I Ever Recover, fronted by Simon Radcliffe himself, before the easy-going, upbeat and blissful Hot and Cold takes a hold of your hear and puts Madonna's 4 Minutes in the shade, showing us exactly how to use brass. I understand this isn't everyone's cup of tea. You either want pop-Jaxx or house-Jaxx. But this album showcases so many sides of so many talents that these men have and the hits outnumber the misses.
Kish Kash
Yes this is a good album, especially tracks like good luck, plug it in and cish cash, however it seems more urban and hip hop like than thier previous albums.
Underated album
Great album. Great tunes. Better than the follow up crazy itch radio and on a par with Rooty. If you're looking for a lively album to get you in the mood for a mad night out then look no further!!
