iTunes Review

With a warm croon that recalls the mature romance of country star Jim Reeves and French pop chansonnier Serge Gainsbourg, and orchestral arrangements ripped from the Lee Hazlewood playbook (or maybe that’s the Tindersticks) Sheffield, England’s Richard Hawley excels at dark, lonely and hypnotic songs of love and loss. “Valentine” opens Hawley’s fifth solo album — named like his previous album, the excellent Cole’s Corner, after a local landmark — with a majestic elegance that twinkles as the strings rise to meet this gracious singer who’s headlining in his own electrified cocktail lounge. Piano and a flowing rhythm mirror the sentiments of “Roll River Roll,” a timeless tune which could have been penned in any decade. “Serious” picks up the pace with a near rockabilly skip. “Tonight the Streets Are Ours” revels in a celebratory vamp. But mostly, Hawley relies on slow, bittersweet pulses (“Lady Solitude,” “Our Darkness,” The Sun Refused to Shine”). Hawley’s reputation began as a capable sideman for Jarvis Cocker and Pulp, but his own talents demand notice as they’re never secondary.

Worth the Wait

Firstly I'd point out that I adore Richard Hawley's previous album "Coles Corner" and would recommend it unreservedly to anybody as an example of British song writing at its slickest and most intelligent. With that in mind Richard's follow up album was always going to have to be monumentally good to beat or even compare with that album. I've listened to the album 5 or 6 times now and the quality of the songs shines through again on Lady's Bridge. Layer upon layer of instruments help to create a huge, lush sound forming the perfect foundation for Hawley's semi ironic, super smooth vocal tone. Valentine and The Sun Refused to Shine are the highlights for me but all tracks are strong. I have to say that perhaps Cole's Corner is a stronger collection of tunes but Lady's Bridge is certainly well worth the wait....a great album. Rich, Lichfield

don't bother buying anything other than this

Singer songwriter crazes, don't you just love 'em? Well forget and foresake all others for this is the album of the day, month and year. Comparisons might well be mooted with Cash, Orbison, Walker et al but why bother when the songwriting, playing and singing is as incomparable as this. An album for driving, for walking down the river with your thoughts and this on your ipod, and for holding your loved ones hand. You could have listened to this 10, 20 or 30 years ago and you can listen to it in 30 years hence and it'll still sound fresh, and timeless but always of it's time. So take your chance to fall in love with the words and music of Sheffield's, nay England's finest songwriter of our days. JerryT

words cant describe How brilliant

What can I say, I really cant fault this album or coles corner at all, both are as good as the other and with this new release its only going to take Richard Hawley to new heights. The top songs from the album in my opinion would be, valentine, roll river roll, serious, tonight the streets are ours, Im looking for someone to find me and the the sun refused to shine, BUT, all songs are excelllent and its well worth the money. This album is perfect for walking in the park by yourself, listening with your other half or any other occasion, I would say its perfect for any age group, young or old, just for the lyrics alone. So finallly just add it to your music library you wont be dissapointed at all.
