spice with flamboyant flavouring
ANYONE who heard Concerto Caledonia's Late Night Sessions at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival will appreciate that categorising David McGuinness's crazily mixed ensemble is pointless.
The grass roots of their repertoire lies in a cocktail of songs and instrumental music of 18th-century Scotland, which they spice with flamboyant flavouring that puts entertainment value at the top of the priority list. In this instance, the mix is restless but enjoyable, ranging from the sober strains of J G C Schetky's Quartetto No1, Op6, the Dowland-like purity of Katherine Fuge's soprano voice in Jahn Abell's Reading Ends in Melancholy, and the thickened textures of harpsichord, lute and harp in Duncan Burnett's Paven, to the folkish growl of Michael Marra in Alasdair Roberts's The Book of Doves and Fuge, this time in mawkish mood, in the whimsical song Black Jock. -- The Scotsman, 10 August 2010
