iTunes Review

James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of the DFA production team have been key players in making indie-rock more groove-worthy over the past few years. You can credit them with the Rapture’s triumphant “House of Jealous Lovers,” among other dance-rock hits. Murphy is credited with “most sounds” on the self-titled debut by his band LCD Soundsystem, which updates ’80s-style dance-rock with one more layer of irony and affection. “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” links the stark style of Gary Numan’s keyboards to something much funkier than Numan himself ever achieved, while other tracks pay back debts to the airier moments of Meddle-era Pink Floyd (“Never As Tired As When I’m Waking Up”) and pre-ambient Eno (“The Great Release”). A full second album’s worth of instant-classic LCD singles, including the rock-snob lament “Losing My Edge,” is included.

Overated

For all the critical praise heaped upon a double album you'd expect it to contain a little more than 3 inspired songs. Most of the remainder are fairly tedious and drone on forever without actually going anywhere or doing anything remotely interesting. It's like Murphy has poured all his influences into a tin of paint and then hurled the contents at a wall. Result = 3 scattered flashes of brilliance, and the rest is a mess. For my money download Daft Punk, Tribulations and Losing My Edge and forget the rest

You'll find it difficult to find anything as quirky, satisfying, and timeless as this

I'm a fan of the current disaffected music from new age punk and romantics, but this goes much further with more depth than your average wannabe joy division or stranglers...there's a great deal of variety in the lyrics, melodies, and percussion..its just so retro 'electronic'...I get hints of Beatles/Pink Floyd in the lyrics and Chemical Brothers meets Daft Punk in the score... Ok, theres more than a hint of 'The fall' too, but I don't want to put you off;) 'Losing my edge' was my fav, and people rave about 'daft punk is playing at my house', but theres also 'great release', 'movement', and 'tribulations' that stand up to repeated listening.

one of my favourite albums

Lcd Soundsystem is an awesome album. It got me really into electronic music, like anything on DFA records, Hot Chip, Air, and Warp records back catologue. truly fantastic. never as tired as when i'm waking up is a surprisingly beautifull beatles type love song.

Biography

Formed: New York, NY

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

LCD Soundsystem debuted with "Losing My Edge," a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous p*****g contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines...
