iTunes Review

Confessions finds Liza Minnelli getting intimate with a set of lovingly-chosen pop standards along with some neglected gems. This release — her first non-cast album in well over a decade — takes its inspiration from casual evenings Liza spent with musician friends at her home over the years. Drawing upon such legendary songwriters as Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman and Hugh Martin for material, the album avoids showbiz glitter in favor of old-fashioned romance and bittersweet nostalgia. Minnelli fills tunes like “This Heart of Mine”, “You Fascinate Me So” and “I Must Have That Man” with a sensuous joie de vivre, teasing the nuances out of each lyric. She especially has fun with “He’s a Tramp” (from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp) and “Moments Like This”. Her rendition of “Remind Me” is elegantly rueful, while her take on the Sinatra classic “All the Way” aches with longing. By interpreting the music she loves in no-frills fashion, Minnelli makes Confessions one of the most satisfying albums in her iconic career.

One part “Sleeps With Angels,” one part “Dead Man,” one part “Arc.”

It’s always difficult to second-guess what Neil Young is going to do next. For those who saw his live shows over the last year, this set should come as little surprise. For those expecting a relative to Harvest or even Ragged Glory, though, this may be more of a shaky ride.

Young perhaps best summed up the ethos of this recording when describing this year’s Twisted Road tour: “I said solo, they said acoustic.” For the majority of the album, the listener is alone with Young and his growling electric guitar. Imagine the guitar work from 1995’s Dead Man soundtrack, mixed with the brooding gloom of Sleeps with Angels and you will come close to the atmosphere of Young’s somewhat unconventional backing – there are no drums or bass to fill out the tracks: this is very much a solo recording. Amazingly, the 64-year-old’s voice retains all of the fragility which first propelled him to stardom in the years immediately after the dissolution of The Buffalo Springfield, but the naivety of the Sugar Mountain days has long deserted him, and his lyrics, while optimistic, are tinged with a stoicism gained through experience.

In terms of production, it’s a simple enough affair, which serves the material well; indeed, producer Daniel Lanois allows the music to speak through, providing the merest of touches here and there throughout the album, thereby retaining its urgency and rawness.

It’s difficult to say how this album will be considered when Young’s career is appraised in its entirety. Anyone who has followed Young’s erratic body of work over the years will doubtless find a great deal here to enjoy. And while Le Noise may not be the best album Young has ever released, it is certainly one of his most interesting, and has opened up a sonic pathway down which I am keen to follow his next excursion.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through...
