Nay bad
Like Plaid's new offering, this was a bit disappointing and with few, if any, stand out tracks that you just want to listen to over and over again. I loved the last two of Dog's harder albums much more; in fact they are two of my all time favourite albums. Bird Siren, Feeder Rub Out and Eden 353 are pretty good tunes but i suspect would only provide filler on say Vexations. Technically you can't really fault it, it just lacks soul and personality.
The album is pretty good for a long late night drive, with deep pulsing bass rhythms and each song running into one another, but then many albums are in this scenario! To make a comparison, it sounds more like the regular downloadable mixes that the Dog do and lacks their own unique energy source. If you think i'm wrong, just remember some of the tracks on Further Vexations or Radio Scarecrow; phenomenal and original in sound and scope with lovely updated twists on the eerie, sometimes threatening, analogue, energised, dark, melodic, melancholic, nostalgic sounds of the 90's mechanical downtempo groups (Dog included). Or is it just great 90's music that was never made at that time, it's hard to tell and that is the beauty of their best music. Personally i would like to see them ditch the Liber airport, pretentious concept album nonsense and just create interesting music again.
At least with the Dog you don't have to wait a decade for each new album to come out and i'm hoping that the next one will provide some stand out tracks up to their usual high standards.
