Album Review
Produced by Captain Beefheart himself, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was a further refining and exploration of the musical ideas posited on Trout Mask Replica. As such, the imaginative fervor of Trout Mask is toned down somewhat, but in its place is an increased self-assurance; the tone of Decals is also a bit darker, examining environmental issues in some songs rather than simply concentrating on surreal wordplay. Whatever the differences, the jagged, complex rhythms and guitar interplay continue to amaze. Those wanting to dig deeper after the essential Trout Mask Replica are advised to begin doing so here.

Lick My Decals Off, Baby
Unavailable on CD for so many years, this is one of Captain Beefheart's finest works, and one of my all-time favourite albums, so I am happy to now see it available for download.
The follow-up to the legendary Trout Mask Replica album: this is a much tighter and more focused collection of songs than its predecessor, but nevertheless jammed full of the uniquely complex polyrhythmic counterpoint that distinguishes TMR, with Beefheart at his lyrical best and the Magic Band at the top of their game.
If the sprawl of TMR is a little daunting for new Beefheart listeners then this album is more approachable, (though you should not ignore TMR once you have become accustomed to the Captain's sonic world).
A magnificent record from one of the few true geniuses to have emerged from the 1960's music scene.
Essential!
This was my first purchase on iTunes, primarily because I prefer to own the CD instead. With Lick My Decals Off, Baby currently unavailable on CD I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to download it.
This is a wonderful collection of songs. If you're looking for an album that repays repeated listening then this is it. It's more immediate than Trout Mask Replica but just as avant garde.
I believe that this is music that everyone can enjoy. It does take time to adjust to the compositions because this is not your usual pop music but with repeated listening it really does evolve into a unique work of art.
Essential!
Lick my decals
How have I lived without this album ? - just an old vinyl copy that i can no longer play. Fills an essential gap between Trout Mask and the albums that followed. Still think TMR is the best, though
