Album Review

Life in Slow Motion is an appropriate name for David Gray's sixth album. It's languid and deliberate — not that this is a bad place for Gray to be, or that it's even a big change of pace for him. As the years passed, he's trimmed away the faster tempos from his music, leaving behind an even-keeled, meditative, soft reflective folk-pop that brought him a hit in 2000 with "Babylon" from his fourth album, White Ladder. Life in Slow Motion isn't too far removed from that album, although it does lack the then-fashionable vague electronica underpinnings. In their place is a mildly lush but not elaborate production that's tasteful and classy, and Gray's songwriting is well mannered and well intentioned. If Gray didn't have a slight rasp to his voice, this music would simply wash over you, since it's a calm, clean album ideal for either background music at work or late-night introspection. Thankfully, the bit of grit in his voice is enough to ground the music. Life in Slow Motion is especially low-key and quiet compared to Gray's other albums, requiring close listening to catch the subtleties in either the lyrics or the music. That means it's a rewarding listen mainly for the faithful who have the time, patience, and inclination to dig into this.

The Perfect Album?

After 'White Ladder' I thought that David Gray had reached his zenith of songwriting ability... I was almost not looking forward to hearing 'New Day At Midnight', but how wrong I was. Next came 'Life In Slow Motion' and I was expecting the eventual slump in quality that is so common with most other artists. Wrong again. There is not one weak song on the album, at the moment my favourite is 'Ain't No Love', but I hear subsequent tracks and my mood changes. Will the next album be better? Probably...and I think my head will explode.

A rare talent!

David Gray fuses some very rare talents, least of all his ability to write some beautiful songs and fuse them with some fine muscianship. His songs are always moving and you feel that he has invested something of himself in every song. The song " The one I love" seems to be so powerful and intimate that you simply can't fail to be moved. This is music at its finest. His emotive folk voice is able to evoke some very delicate moods. This album has been played continuously in my household for the last few months. It will not disappoint. Another piece of work showing us that David Gray is a very rare talent indeed.

Life In Slow Motion

From the sublime Intro of 'Alibi ' to the clever 'disappearing world ' david gray reaches new levels of intensity on this latest offering.Life in slow motion proves that some artists can improve and develop their songwriting craft and not dumb down just because of previous commercial success with 'White ladder'.Fantastic album that should be considered a classic.
