Lioness: Hidden Treasures

Lioness: Hidden Treasures

This is the first official posthumous compilation of Amy Winehouse’s previously unreleased recordings. Her family chose the selections with help from production luminaries Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi. Lioness: Hidden Treasures opens with a cover of Bob Hilliard and Mort Garson’s “Our Day Will Come,” which was a 1963 hit for Ruby & the Romantics. Though Winehouse’s soulful vocal performance reflects the original’s, her band’s take on the song more closely reflects the 1971 reggae/lovers-rock version by The Heptones. Winehouse’s own “Tears Dry” and “Half Time” are top-notch cuts that sound as rich as any seminal Motown or Stax recording of yesteryear. She sings with palpable heartbreak in her voice on the gripping “Wake Up Alone.” Winehouse’s covers often seem like new creations; such is the case with the impassioned duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul.” Other remade gems include a peppy take on “The Girl from Ipanema” and a rendition of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You.”
