Little Criminals

Bought it in 1977, still have it on vinyl, what can you say? Why has hardly anyone in the UK heard of Randy Newman - I think that's criminal. In my opinion he has to be the best, most ironic, song writer and lyricist the USA has ever produced

Brilliant, blistering,

If it's not Randy's finest album (which accolade still belongs to Good Ol' Boys), Little Criminals is nonetheless an extraordinary album by one of the finest American songwriters of the last century (who these days seems best known for passable soundtracks to Pixar movies). From the scathing yet haunting irony of "Sigmund Freud's Impersonation of Albert Einstein in America" to the chilling "In Germany before the War" (about serial killer Peter Kurten) to masterpieces like "Baltimore" and elegies like "Texas Girl at the Funeral of the Father" this is an album worth relistening to for decades. So far I've notched up three.

Not my cup of tea

I find most of the works on this album to be the beginnings of what could have been some good songs - if only they'd been finished. A quick review of the track lengths illustrates my point of view. The songs are all very short in duration and melancholy in nature. Most feel as though they could've been greatly expanded upon to be something much greater than what they are - which is mostly a good beginning and a deep, complex thought that the artist has attempted to convey within the duration of the average pop tune.

Randy Newman was an anomaly among early-'70s singer/songwriters. Though he was slightly influenced by Bob Dylan, his music owed more to New Orleans R&B and traditional pop than folk. Newman developed an idiosyncratic style that alternated between sweeping, cinematic pop and rolling R&B, which were tied together by his nasty sense of humor. Where his peers concentrated on confessional songwriting, Newman drew characters, creating a world filled with misfits, outcasts, charlatans, and con men....
