Album Review

Shrill and freaky. Anarchic and a bit oompah-oompah. Almost unanimously loathed. Perhaps what you'd expect if you raised small orphans solely on prog-rock records scratched into the higher channels of Megadeth's Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! while they formed a union to demand to go catch the latest Dexy's Midnight Runners tour. Cardiacs' first studio album is one for the amnesiacs of the world. It leaps about, chews on its own rhythms — like "In a City Lining," often 43 times within the same song — eschewing choruses as if conventional songwriting caused cancer. It's reckless, difficult music that still retains a sense of celebration. The equivalent of a top-secret document with the best bits blacked out.

Brilliant album

For many fans, The Whole World Window and Is This The Life were the songs that we simply stood and cried to when watching the Cardiacs play live, all those years ago. Many other brilliant tracks on here (in fact all of them!). Try out R.E.S. for the authentic Cardiacs experiance.

Ignore the idiot from iTunes!

They take more than 1 listen to understand - but perseverence pays dividends with this band. Once you start getting it their music becomes addictive and everything else starts becoming bland. Step away from the mainstream and discover passion for music like never before!
God bless the Cardiacs.

Never believe what you read....

Well, only if it is the itunes review - "Almost unanimously loathed". Listen and make up your own mind. The Cardiacs are a matter of taste, an that matter of taste is what is commonly known as good taste. This album will give you a good introduction to earlier Cardiacs, but I urge you to listen to the live albums and especially to Sing to God (both parts). RES is probably the most accessible song on this album.

I hope that now the Cardiacs are available on itunes that they get the recognition they have always deserved. It has been said that they are the most popular band that noone has ever heard of. Jump into the pool crammed full of die hard Cardiacs fans (yes we are many), the water is warm, just keep an eye out for the big ugly shark.

Biography

Formed: 1978

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Combining the D.I.Y.-attitude of the early punk years with an affection for progressive rock acts such as Gong and Gentle Giant, the U.K. act the Cardiacs formed in late 1977 by Tim Smith, who quickly enlisted brother Jim Smith to join the fledgling outfit. The alleged fact that Jim couldn't play an instrument mattered little and the band took the moniker Cardiac Arrest. Their first actual release was a single, "A Bus for a Bus on the Bus," in 1979, which they followed with a full-length cassette...
