Album Review

Of all the grebo bands, it was Jesus Jones that hit hardest in America, with the band slamming two singles into the U.S. Top Five in 1991. That success allowed them to hang on longer than their colleagues, until their label gave all but singer Mike Edwards the boot in 1997. A few more fruitless years passed before the band were resurrected in 2001. Live at the Marquee catches up with the group late the following year, 1998, on-stage at London's Marquee club. There, they ecstatically slam through a 25-song, 95-minute set that encompasses their entire career, including their controversial 2001 number, "In the Face of All of This," a sharp commentary on the current state of the world. It's not just Jesus Jones' short haircuts, however, that signify the times have changed; their sound has shifted significantly as well. Gone is the jubilant bounce of old, replaced by a much harder rock edge. It's particularly noticeable on both their smash "Right Here, Right Now," which originally boasted a majestic sweep, but here is surprisingly sparse, and the previously effervescent "Real Real Real," now sporting a decided heft. Even if the band's lighter touch is gone, the battering beats and funky bass lines are still predominant, giving even the rockingest numbers a dance flare. "Nowhere Slow" kicks into high speed, "Trust Me" is ferocious, and when they reach the grand finale, "Idiot Stare," Jesus Jones go out in an incendiary blaze. Extras include backstage footage, a totally useless bio, but extensive band interviews that fill in all the gaps. The grebos are back with a vengeance.

Live at the Marquee

Live at the Marquee is a really good album for established fans of the band, all of the biggest and best songs from across the years are covered in the set, including a smattering of those from, in my view their best if least heard album “London” from 2001. As I-tunes don’t have this album its an opportunity to hear tracks like the excellent “message” and “In the face of all this”. The official review is perhaps a little too glowing as some of the vocals are a bit rough around the edges at times but the pace of the music and the sound of the band is a strong as ever and as a genuine live album the odd missed note or forgotten and mumbled line on “devil you know” are easily forgiven. For fans of the band who have been around since the start, the best part of the album will perhaps be the fifty odd minutes of interviews with Mike and the rest of the band, which give an insight into the history of the songs and how they were developed.

All in all well worth £5.99 of my money, just a shame there isn’t a new album to look forward to....

Jesus Jones' murky mix of samples, pop, dance tracks, and techno resulted in one huge international hit single, "Right Here, Right Now" (taken from their second album, Doubt), that pretty much sums up all of the band's virtues — a strong melody and hook, with a flair for making the dance club overtones mesh with the rock guitar. To hear Jesus Jones' flaws, turn to their first album, which suffered from muddy beats, shapeless melodies, and intrusive samples, all of which also plagued sections...
