Startling / original
Tracey Thorn's new record is her thirteenth, if you count her EBTG and Marine Girls albums. Luckily for us, it's probably her most interesting lyrically: ten songs largely about what being older feels like. This bold and original move pays a beautiful dividend throughout, with standouts like Oh the Divorces ('the honeymoons, the wedding rings, the afternoon handovers by the swings') and Singles Bar ('can you tell my age in this light / in these jeans'). It's all cut thru with a nice ironic humour and lo-fi playing and singing that just reminds you why Tracey has been in music for 30 years now: her ability to write and perform startling and original work.
She's really back this time...
Full and frank disclosure - if I could only save a single artist's work from my massive music collection as the house was burning, it would be Everything But The Girl. That said, while I tried hard, I just couldn't love Tracey's last solo album - it felt too much like a series of set-pieces that had more to do with the producer than Tracey herself. This new album, in contrast, will feel instantly like an old friend to EBTG/Thorn/Watt fans. That's not to say that her writing hasn't evolved over the years, but there's something in her musical DNA that is recognisably her and no-one else. In my opinion the best female voice of her generation, I already know that from the thousands of albums I own, this will be one of the elite few that I know word by word and note by note, and return to often.
Oh, the voice!
It's always a treat to hear Tracey's amazing voice, it never fails to transport my mind someplace else.
