Album Review

The Raveonettes third album Lust Lust Lust is the sound of a band rescuing their career from the clutches of cliché and rediscovering the magic that made them so exciting on their debut Chain Gang of Love. The opening track "Aly, Walk with Me" serves notice that things are going to be a lot different, the menacing prowl of the verses giving way to a deafening burst of white light/white heat noise halfway through the song. Anyone fearing that Lust Lust Lust would be another record lost to over-production and slickness should, once they regain their hearing, be ecstatic. The duo recapture the fire, mystery, and dirty glamour of their early records and add a sharper melodic sense on a batch of songs that will stick to you like a sharp knife between the ribs. Tracks like the thrillingly bleak yet devastatingly pretty "Dead Sound," the swaying "The Beat Dies," and the classically melodic "Black Satin" are as good as anything the band has done to date (and frankly, compare quite ably to the work of their most obvious influence, the Jesus and Mary Chain). Sune Rose Wagner took over the production task from Richard Gottherer and stripped away all remnants of the glossy hack job they did on Pretty in Black. Throughout the record, the reverb is so heavy it might make you woozy, the drums clatter like trash can lids, and the vocals struggle to make it through the layers of haze but Wagner's light touch and newfound sense of restraint means the arrangements sound fully realized and if not three-dimensional, a very strong two. Sharin Foo's vocals sounds as glacial and, as ever, Wagner's guitar melodies are note perfect (check his work on "Blitzed" for a short lesson on how to do a lot with only a few notes) and the two of them appear as reassuringly unwholesome as ever. Happy about it even, as they sing of being tied to evil hearts, black lollipops, and death by deceit in their sweet and unconcerned voices. Lust Lust Lust should have been the follow up to Chain Gang of Love; Pretty in Black can just be considered a mistake, and fans of the fuzzy, decadent and over-driven version of the Raveonettes can be happy that they have their band back; nastier, prettier and better than ever.

i love the raveonettes too

i do, i love theyre style, their aesthetic, where they are coming from musically, their influences etc!!! and i really like their sound, but, its hard to listen i think however much i like it, because they have their guitars going on and their drum machine n whatever else filling out your speakers, but they have this trashy fuzz thing going on in the back ground, bit like jesus and mary chain(actually i think the 'nettes sound more like jesus and mary than brmc!!). its like they separate the guitar tone from the guitar fuzz and its in the background just muddying up the whole sound. its like u want to stick cotton buds in ur ears and scrub out some muck coz it just doesnt sound clear!!! comparing their version of my boyfriends back to the original by the ronettes, was like wow!! the original is so crisp and clear in the recording and such a simple song, and the raveonettes have this drudgy murk in the back ground muddying up the sound!! one thing that just annoys me about listening to their records!! and this one!! but i do like their music odly enough and this is their best album so far id say, nothing as catchy really as love in a trashcan but, the songs are cool and so are the 3d specs and lyric sheet with the cd!!! not the best review of an album i know, but i just wanted to get my opinion off my chest! if ur a rave's fan get it defo its their best, just them doing their thing as they always have js gettin a bit better at the whole songwriting thing!

Yay :D

What an album . (: x

Ravenonettes

What an amazing band, heard Blush on the radio and brought this album straight away, can't believe I've not heard of them before. Reminds of My Bloody Valentine with a hint of Jesus & Mary Chain, throw in some Lush & Joy Zipper, all my fav bands rolled into one. Dead Sound sends shivers down my spine its so good. It's one of those albums that gets better with very listen, is sexy sleazy music at it's best. Lead singer is hot too!!

Biography

Formed: Copenhagen, Denmark

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Combining the noisy swells of the Jesus and Mary Chain with melodic elements of '50s rock & roll, the Raveonettes formed in Copenhagen during the early 2000s. Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner had tried assembling a band for several years, traveling between New York City, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and an island outside of Seattle in his search for like-minded musicians. A longtime fan of Bob Dylan, he also prized the songwriting of Buddy Holly, the harmonies of the Everly Brothers, and the guitar work of...
