Amazing

Their first single in 11 years and I must say that I was expecting something different from this. When I first heard it i thought it was awful. Now after several listens I get it. Its like nothing out at the moment and is exactly how Portishead should sound in 2008. Excellent

A brutal attack on...?

Machine Gun marks the almighty return of Portishead, a band who have refused to be labelled in the past even though they are constantly called the true pioneers of Trip-Hop, a genre that is now all but dead. But Machine Gun is very different to anything we have heard from Bristol's finest in the past; this dark, aural assault of intense electronic drums (not a drum machine as the forthcoming video reveals) blasts the listener while Beth Gibbon's world weary vocals attempt to break through, then it all goes wrong as the beats begin to mutate and distort before finally giving way to an eerie retro synth sequence which carries to track to its epic climax. Cold, beautiful, evil and totally unlike anything we have heard in a long time; Machine Gun deserves to be heard by all, but in a fickle music industry that largely ignores real talent in favour of tried and tested formulas, Machine Gun will probably go unnoticed by a large number of people.... and maybe that’s the point?

Totally Agree With Colin S

It takes several listens but when you get it.Checkout the ending (not in the preview) it almost mutates into an Aphex Twin track.A much harder but familiar sound. You can listen to live tracks from 'Third' on Youtube.

Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. Taking their cue from the slow, elastic beats that dominated Massive Attack's Blue Lines and adding elements of cool jazz, acid house, and soundtrack music, Portishead created an atmospheric, alluringly dark sound. The group wasn't as avant-garde as Tricky, nor as tied to dance traditions as Massive Attack; instead, it wrote evocative pseudo-cabaret pop songs that subverted their conventional...
