Touching, moving, sweet and soulful
Anyone who bought Iain's last album, Flood The Tanks, will not be suprised at how he's evolved his sound, but for those for whom Magnetic North is their introduction to him, you need to know a few things. Firstly, Flood The Tanks is also an album of beautifully written songs, albeit with a two or three more rockier songs, and Magnetic North is a natural progression of sorts. His simple but affecting lyrics are laid over occasionally sparse, folky instrumentation but on tracks such as Minus Ten and When It Kicks In Archer's rockier side comes to the fore. Flood The Tanks is also worthy of investigation. In fact, it's worthy of buying right this very second so don't read any more. However, Iain is also a sometime member of Snow Patrol and the Reindeer Section, and he co-wrote some of Final Straw's finest moments. AND, his older brother Paul is the singer/guitarist with the equally excellent band The Ghears. Support the Archer brothers, you know it makes sense...
Magnetic North is an album of rare beauty.
Excellent songs played in a delicate style. Have seen Iain a couple of times over the summer doing solo and duo sets at Glasgowbury and Vital - so some of the tunes are familiar. The album is even better than I expected - moving on from Flood the Tanks. Do not hesitate - buy it!
Impressive, as expected
This latest album from Iain is truly amazing, its fresh, invigorating & soulful. I love the sound of Iain Archer's voice and the music arrangement is spectacular. This is a MUST buy :-)
