Strong Set of Songs
This EP really shows off the bands progression after the first two singles. The last song if you havn't heard it before will take you by surprise and is different from anything they have done before seperating them from other 'typical indie' bands. It is perfectly written indie music.
Matching Hearts, Similar Sound
On this four-track EP from London quartet Flashguns there are plenty of scuzzy guitars and some nice melodies, all wrapped together by some neat arrangements. Lead track 'I Don't Not Love You' chugs along nicely and adopts a very eighties manifestation, like a great deal of the current indie scene. Their sound is akin to Talking Heads, particularly Sam Johnston's fragile vocals, which are not too dissimilar to David Byrne's style. 'Bells At Midnight' is a jumpier affair, as is 'St George', a number that sways and swirls around and finds itself building up to a quivering yet emphatic climax. Top track is the final epic piece 'Racing Race', which clocks the best part of seven minutes. It combines some clever instrumental work with sensitive vocals and wavers into a more progressive arena, although never reaches self indulgence despite its length. Prompts thoughts here of the much underrated Envy Corps who released one of last year's most overlooked albums. A neat collection that showcases where the band are at and gives promise of bigger and bolder things ahead. They have the ability, they have the break with the current tour, so hopefully there's more to be heard from Flashguns.
really strong
on all four tracks - each track gets better and better with each listen - I Don't Not Love You deserves to be a break away hit. the Ep on the whole, especially Racing Race shows how far the band have come and how much potential they have - im really excited to see them grow and see where they take their sound. so far soooooooo good!
