Outstanding
Once every Decade or so, along comes a new Musical that redefines the genre. This is one such Musical - truly some of the best music written for theatre that I have ever heard. It touches every emotion and draws you in. Before you know it you will be listening to it again and again as we have for the last month. We have seen a lot of Musicals, and listened to a lot of recordings - but tehre has to be something special when you find yourself listening again and again - and again. I would say this is perhaps the best original Musical I have ever seen. We were lucky enough to see it in Stratford on its original run in January 2011 - and will be seeing it again in London.
If you are familiar with the story fo Matilda, you will adore the characterisations and will most likely be bowled over by Bertie Carvel's Miss Trunhbull. The cast is of course astounding - particularly the youngsters (it is amazing how 10 and 11 year olds can carry an entire 2 hour Musical with such confidence that you don't even have to m,ake allowances for their age). But what comes out above anything else is the wonderfully crafted music and the delicious lyrics; oh - they are so very clever! My life was not complete until I had listened to "Naughty", "When I grow Up" and "The Hammer". Now it may well be!
If you are not Familiar with Matilda - no matter - you soon will be - and this CD is a wonderful introduction not only to one of the best Children's books ever written - but to the wonderful dark and gritty style (not to mention Quentin Blake-iness)...
Buy and listen to it again and again.... The beg, borrow or steal a tciket to see the show in London. Enjoy!
Simply superb
This is a truly wonderful show in every way. Tim Minchin's music and lyrics are a perfect soundtrack to this superb show. The songs are joyful, moving, clever, funny and a delight to listen to. if you possilby can, you should really go and see this in London. It thoroughly deserves to run for years and years.
