Fabulous, slightly edgy soul for the 21st century
I've been looking forward to hearing this ever since I learnt that Ashley Beedle was working on a new project for K7. While the first 2 tracks (featuring Kurt Wagner, an X-Press 2 collaborator and John Turrell) are fairly similar in sound and key thing start to brach out a little more as the album progresses. Notably, I really enjoyed the main single "Revolution" featuring Candi Staton, "Puzzles and Riddles" which takes it down a notch and envelopes the listener in a warm, tangy sonic blanket and the achingly beautiful 4:14 featuring SA singer Cherilyn MacNeil. If you listen to the album for what it is, an eclectic take on modern soul then you will amply rewarded. If you're expecting "Ashley Beedle the Remixer" then look elsewhere.
Nice idea
Really makes me want to listen to Alpha, though, who nailed this sort of vibe way back in 1997.
