Album Review

Some album titles offer little, if any, indication of what the music sounds like, but Metal is a highly appropriate title for this album because it contains exactly that: metal — specifically, thrash metal with alternative metal moves here and there. Given the numerous personnel changes that Annihilator has experienced along the way, longtime fans couldn't help but wonder what new lineup guitarist Jeff Waters (Annihilator's only constant over the years) would be unveiling this time. But in fact, the lineup on Metal — Waters on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, and bass, Dave Padden on lead vocals, and Mike Mangini on drums — is the same lineup that appears on 2004's All for You and 2005's Schizo Deluxe. For those who have been following Annihilator since the '80s, it is surprising to see Waters being able to maintain the same lineup for three albums in a row. The main difference between this 2007 recording and the two Waters/Padden/Mangini discs that came before it is the fact that on Metal, Waters employs a long list of guest musicians. Among the guests: Willie Adler of Lamb of God, Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom, Jesper Strömblad of In Flames and Anders Bjorler of the Haunted. That is an attention-grabbing list of guests, but ultimately, it is Waters, Padden, and Mangini who do the most to make Metal worthwhile, and inspired tracks like "Downright Dominate," "Clown Parade," and "Detonation" demonstrate that Annihilator can still deliver quality thrash after all these years. Waters, not Padden, handles the lead vocals on "Operation Annihilation," reminding us that Padden is, in fact, a much better singer. But Waters' guitar-playing skills are consistently impressive on Metal, which falls short of essential but is still an exciting and ballsy demonstration of what Annihilator's Waters/Padden/Mangini lineup has to offer.

Old School Metal!

Quality band, quality music and with some of the best metal guitarist struting their stuff on it aswell. All songs are so catchy you can like sing along to it after you have heard each song once. One of the best songs is "Downright Dominate" catchy as hell and its got Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom playing some of the solos. Difinite for any old school metalhead!!!!

Annihilator Own!

This is the best Annihilator album so far and I think that Jeff Waters did not do one wrong move by adding all these guest artists. 'Downright Dominate' is an underrated metal gem - whoever first had the idea of mixing Jeff Waters and Alexi Laiho together in one great metal song deserves a medal! As we all know from Nevermore's latest album, Jeff Loomis is an absolutely incredible shredder and he doesn't disappoint, retaining melody and shredding in his solos on 'Clown Parade' - that's a rare thing nowadays. And what an incredible host of other guitarists! Jesper Stromblad can let it rip, Willie Adler has a real way with riffs for some reason, Lamb of God have the most memorable ones. And he brings his hi-tech riffing and sweep picking with him to 'Chasing the High'. 'Metal' seems to keep getting better and better: there are NO catches.

solid

this album is immense as it includes sum of my fav guitarists. but mid way through the album it fades away but picks it up near the end. best tracks r clown parade, couple suicide and army of one.

Canadian thrashers Annihilator are the lifework of guitarist Jeff Waters, who founded the band in his native Vancouver in 1984 — just as the speed metal revolution was getting underway further to the south in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due in large part to this geographical isolation, Annihilator as a band phased in and out of existence over the next few years, with only Waters as a constant factor, but...
