Album Review

Since bursting onto the grime scene in 2004, 25-year-old East London MC Kano has produced records with the likes of Mike Skinner, Damon Albarn, and Craig David, and provided guest appearances on albums by Chase & Status, Gorillaz, and Shy FX. His fourth studio release, Method to the Maadness, continues his collaborative tendencies, hooking him up with the likes of quirky synth pop outfit Hot Chip, Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, and the Godfather of Grime, Wiley, on an eclectic 13 tracks, which Kano argues are his most experimental to date. Opening tracks "2 Left: Topic of Discussion," a formulaic blend of languid beats, Fisher-Price production, and jarring Lil Wayne-esque elongated vocals, and the ubiquitous urban electro sounds of "Get Wild," suggest otherwise. But once the brief radio phone-in skit, "iPod Generation," and the generic, guitar-laced "Maad" are out of the way, Method to the Maadness begins to live up to its creator's claims. "Spaceship" is a cautionary tale on the merits of fame set against a backdrop of brooding dubstep rhythms and hypnotic kaleidoscopic glockenspiels, the Damon Albarn-produced "Bassment" is a head-nodding slice of authentic, minimal '80s-style hip-hop reminiscent of seminal rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, while closing track "Dark Days" is an introspective, ambient electronica epic featuring a soaring Tears for Fears-style new wave chorus. Best of all is the defiant "Upside," which brilliantly fuses Kano's frenetic lyrical delivery with old-school brass production and Michelle Breeze's vulnerable but engaging vocals. The teaming up with Hot Chip, "All + All Together," which must have looked like a potential standout on paper is, in reality, a rather disappointingly pedestrian attempt at electro-dancehall, while the witty lyricism of the Ghetts-featuring "Lady Killer" can't mask its irritating, high-pitched Batman-theme-styled instrumentation. Contrary to what its title suggests, Method to the Maadness' sprawling inconsistencies appear to highlight the complete lack of method in his madness, but apart from the predictable opening third of the disc, it's a highly inventive effort which refuses to compromise his genre-straddling sensibilities. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

Kano MTTM!!

He's not a mainstream MC. He'd hate it if he saw that! He's underground who's taking it into the mainstream. 'Sometimes I have to kick myself... Coz sometimes I cant believe this shh myself, So sometimes you see me in a day dream, thinking can the underground go mainstream?'
Well he constantly answers this.. Upside, All + All together now, get wild, spaceship & mad are the answer. YES!
Kano hasn't done a tinchy or chipmunk and sold their soul for fame & money... Bringing out music with chorus after chorus for the clubs with no lyrical intellect. Where as K-A is well known But puts the music first before every other luxury offered to him. He's the one chance the UK has left to stop the industry from collapsing into an Ibiza/X Factor chart!
I think artist after artist from this generation to the next is going to be influenced from this album. If I could mark it out of 5. I'd give it 10.
He's taking the industry sole-handily far away from here!

KA smashed it again

Method to the Madness pushes boundries and embraces Kano's grime background over funky and unique beats while remaining exclusively Kano, the bars still showcase Kano's outstanding lyrical talent. While other grime artiest have recently enjoyed much success in the commercial scene Kano remains loyal to his background, which undoubtably earns him respect. Expect tunes such as Lady-Killer and Spaceship certain to be chart hits.

ignore "Mc Awol"

"Mc Awol" cant be a fan of kano, probably a fan of "Ps and Qs" like every other "grime" fan who wants him to do grime, when the truth is he never did stick to the grime genre. look at his first album, theres rock and drum and base. This is also evident on MMTD, theres rock, dubstep, electro, so many different flavours on the album which makes this album so unique. kano likes to break the boundaries and is a wiser and older artist now. To be able to create this alum all on his own without a label behind him is unbelievable. He is so talented, i just hope everyone will realise this one day.
I am a real kano fan from the beginning who has loved ever kano track ever made, so keep it coming kane!
cant wait for the next album!

"Mc Awol" you know nothing about music so plz dont appear on my itunes or screen ever again. mong
