Album Review

Bring on the Greenwich Village eclecticism kissed by California sunshine. Since arriving on the scene as a solo artist in the late '90s —after being half of the celebrated duo Groove Theory with Mantronix rapper Bryce Wilson — Amel Larrieux has taken the restless path of following her own muse as both a singer and a songwriter. Morning is her third solo offering, and her second for her Blisslife label. Taking the nu-soul aesthetic to new heights, she crafts wonderfully strange and beautiful songs that are big on subtle yet permeating rhythm tracks. Her layered vocals — replete with her amazing range — are backed by a glorious combination of electric and acoustic instruments courtesy of her keyboards and her multi-instrumentalist husband, Laru. Standout tracks include the shimmering "Trouble" that opens the set, the slippery light funk of "Unanswered Questions," the skeletal groove-conscious "Earn My Affections," the folk-soul of the title cut, the angular futurism of "Magic," and the nocturnally insistent psychedelic soul closer that is "Mountain of When." That's not to say that the other cuts are losers. There isn't a weak moment here, which raises the question of how a marginal talent like Norah Jones can cut the big time with so little effort when Larrieux — who is as multi-talented as Alicia Keys and a better singer, and who makes fine records on a fraction of the budget — remains hanging in the shadows. Morning is sophisticated, soulful, sexy, and forward-looking, and should be checked out by anyone interested in truly great pop music.

There is hope..

Right now, RnB music is just a dry barren wasteland. What we have in the UK right now is an influx of conveyor belt music, with factory manufactured bands, and plastic dolls. If you shake the right parts, and can do covers of old songs, then you are a star. What pish posh! I miss the days when music moved you. However, since Alicia Keys is away on sabbatical and Aaliyah is no longer with us (R.I.P), who have we now to turn to? A ray of light has appeared from over the wasteland. Since the days of Groove Theory, and Tell Me, where she was with Bryce Luvah (the cousin of LL Cool J, and rapper in Mantronix) behind the boards, this woman’s voice has raised the echelon of music to a level you cannot even begin to imagine. The exploitation of 'urban' music by the media, and this 'bling' madness seems to have made everyone think that it is ok just to listen to what is out there. The real artists have gone missing - until now! Amazing return of a woman with an angelic voice, and smooth harmonies that caress your soul! Now if only the same could be said for the state of Hip Hop music... waiting for it's saviour also.

Who Is Amel Larrieux?

If I was to describe Amel's music in one word it would be Sensational! Her voice is captivating, Amel is endowed with an awe-inspiring talent her voice is distinguishable and emotive. Her lyrics are inspiring, moving and touching. I first came across her voice when listening to the song "For Real", which is a definate 5 star debut. Amel fuses soul, jazz, rnb and international rhythms to produce an incredible album. The song "Weary" (one of my personal favorites) describes the pain of domestic violence which contrasts the feeling of love in "For Real" and the echoes of hope in "Bravebird". If one is to compare Amel to other artists Sade Adu, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu are possible comparisons. Amel is incredibly talented and I hope her success will indicate the need for purer, deeper and music of higher quality that is in my opinion deperately needed in today's music industry.
