Wicked and Growing
This is an excellent album. Tempo varies from the foot tapping Wicked Soul, to the slower Without You and the utterly soulful set of Grow, Sun, Bitch, Burn Again and the absolutely outstanding Chemical. Harry Collier has an amazing voice (they have to be heard live as well), John Tilley's keyboards are amazing, Adj's guitar playing and Dom Greensmith's excellent drumming combine to make a group that is well worth a listen. And a second album is being worked on - it's been a long wait for this one, let's hope not so long for the next. Forget the Keane, Jeff Buckley comparisons, Kubb are unique.
Mother: Enough to give anyone an Oedipus complex
This debut album collides bang into your aural G-spot and leaves you pining for more like a kid on the first day of school weening for its mummy. Comparisons to other bands abound, but Kubb's performance here shunts their bed-wetting, teacher-petting classmates into the dunce's corner and claims title to coolest kid in school. Every box gets a tick - Atmospheric, epic ballads: check. Dangerous and sexy songs like that hot and fast encounter with the married History teacher in the store cupboard: check.... oh you didn't?...oops. Painfully gorgeous elegies: check. If you buy one album this year, make it Kubb's Mother. It's enough to give anyone an Oedipus complex.
Nowhere near as good as the hype...
This album is Kubb's debut, and is notable more for how it came about than for anything on the disc. Harry Collier, the singer-songwriter for the band, got his break when he performed Happy Birthday for a diner in a café in London within earshot of Rollo from Faithless. Unfortunately, although he can sing (and he can sing very well - you have to go towards Muse, Radiohead, Buckley for the comparisons), the songs are somewhat formulaic. Sounding for all the world like an X Factor winner recording a bunch of songs, Collier doesn't ever feel like he inhabits the song, or is doing anything other than simply delivering it. The big question is whether the world needs more great singers who can't write music that matters. The music here is listenable, well produced and rock-based, but there are times when it is too Bat Out Of Hell for its own good.
