iTunes Review

Building on the success of their previous album, 1980’s Permanent Waves, Rush seemed even more energized approaching this landmark studio release that helped define not just the group but the early ‘80s hard rock era. “Tom Sawyer” has become the prototype for radio-friendly progressive rock, an immediate anthem that set the challenge for other groups to follow. Heavy without being abrasive, loud without losing subtlety, Rush were instrumental leaders in their field. Their playing is unrivalled, from Neil Peart’s ambitious drum fills and sneaky time signatures to Alex Lifeson’s gruesomely electrified guitar riffs and singer Geddy Lee’s anchoring bass and elliptical keyboard noodling. The extended passages of “The Camera Eye” hinted at the group’s earlier epic ambitions, but the band’s profile here primarily settled into the modest format of “Red Barchetta,” a parable for libertarianism, and “Limelight,” a social comment on stardom, two succinct fan favorites that manage both technical mastery and emotional catharsis. The complex instrumental “YYZ,” based on the Morse code for their Toronto homeland, has become a textbook case for aspiring rock musicians.

One of Many Greats

The first four tracks on Moving Pictures are all Rush Classics and deservedly still all receive concert performances, The album as a whole is considered by critics to be their finest but most Rush fans will agree that it is just one of many outstanding albums. Still it is nice to have at least one of thier albums in Q magazines greatest Rock albums of all time list! The second half of the album starts off with, sadly their last song to ever exceed 7 minutes. The Camera Eye is an excellent song but perhaps one of the weaker of the long songs and maybe it was the time to hang up the towel on multi-part compositions; but I would love to see them do one more. Witch Hunt is very cool and the 1st part (or 3rd depending on which way you look at it) of the 'Fear' trilogy, Vital Signs sounds like it should be on Signals but this perfectly shows us the evolution of Rush at work.

Most probably Rush's best album!

I was advised by a freind to purchase Rush's Moving Pictures album...so thats exactly what I did. What was the outcome? AMAZING! Rush have their own unique sound which is truly superb and their tecnicality is up there with fellow prog-rockers Dream Theater. You could say Rush sounds like a mixture of Yes, Dream Theater's less heavy moments and Queen. It is truly a wierd mix, but Rush's ability to write complex, melodical songs is sure to make any listener happy. The song Limelight is my personal favourite beacuse of its easy going, feel-good simplicity. Overall, I strongly advise all progressive music fans to buy this album and if you can't stand prog-rock listen to the song Limelight, maby that will change your mind about the beautiful gene.
