iTunes Review

Before Brendan Benson came to most people’s attention as a member of Jack White’s Raconteurs he was crafting his own pleasurable power pop for discerning ears. Now with a raised profile and an expanded recording budget, Benson can carefully tailor his ideas to more accurately reflect his ambitions. This extra-smoothness is a double-edged sword since Benson is by nature a smooth operator and it’s the extra gruff that gives his music the necessary edge. But mostly the extra money and care means the guitars are slightly manicured and the harmonies are seamless. “A Whole Lot Better” bristles with a ‘60s vibe. “Eyes On the Horizon” twists and turns on a serpentine guitar line and vocals that sneak onto the scene. “Gonowhere” slips into a ‘70s-styled laid-back environment. “Misery” channels Elvis Costello with its verbal flights. Traces of David Bowie, Paul McCartney and other pop superstars can be heard if not exactly nailed down. It’s as if Benson imagines a radio station he wishes existed and is busy stocking its playlist.

A belter

Classic Brendan, clearly energised after his stint with the Raconteurs Benson returns with an album of power pop gems. Recorded by a higher profile artist these songs would be all over the radio. As it is for some reason Mr B is largely ignored by the record buying public. In a parallel universe somewhere these tunes are being hummed by milkmen. Check out Lapalco if you haven't already.

Buy this album and buy his back catalogue - Unappreciated but Brilliant Benson

Its about time that this man was recognised in the main for he is a truly talented Singer songwriter up there with Elliott Smith in my book another Genius with Cult status Love all of his music!!!

Feel like taking this home?

Definately. My first experience of Benson was when I bought the Raconteurs "Steady, as She Goes" all those years ago, and having followed the Raconteurs (and to be fair the entirety of Jack White's career) and their musicians as much as possible, I listened to and loved the earlier albums, especially "The Alternative to Love", not for the hard rock music i used to know Benson for, but for the almost ironic pop, the cheap but brilliant rhymes, the cheesy love ballads and the more serious attempts. Having waited for this album since I was alerted of it, I'm loving this first lesson. Perhaps the Raconteurs have influenced Benson in his writing, for the songs seem to have a darker edge (well some at least), but the pop is still prevalent, with the synthetic keyboards and twanging but spare guitar all blending into a wonderfully lighthearted and carefree album. The better songs include "A Whole Lot Better" "Poised and Ready" and "Don't Wanna Talk", however as I've listened to the album only once thusfar I'm sure the entire thing will quickly become just as absorbing. All in all, you know what you get from this guy. It's serious fun, just don't take it too seriously.

A Michigan-born songwriter who occupies the rockier end of the power pop spectrum (more indebted to the Who than the Raspberries, that is), Brendan Benson debuted at the age of 26 with a sterling first album, 1996's One Mississippi. He continued working as a solo artist for the better part of a decade, releasing three albums of his own while occasionally appearing on other artists' records. However, Benson remained a minor part of the musical mainstream until 2005, when he began collaborating with...
