Album Review

Antony Genn and Martin Slattery had certainly paid their musical dues, playing with '90s groups Elastica, Pulp, and Black Grape, so coming together for their first official release as the Hours was highly anticipated. Opening with a metronome on the first single, "Ali in the Jungle" which is a tribute to heroes who never gave up from Ali to Nelson Mandela to Beethoven, as the lyrics so eloquently state "Ludwig Van, how I loved that man, the guy went deaf, and couldn't give a f**k." Here is an album which gave Slattery a chance to thump the piano, on some tracks louder and louder and more and more insistent, and Genn a chance to wail to his heart's content. "Back When You Were Good" almost comes across as an attempt at a singalong anthem, slowly building to a crescendo after a near one and a half minute intro. "Love You More" starts as a simple ode to what Genn loves, including lyrics such as "I love you more than my record collection, my football team and my Adidas trainers" but by the end of the song, as he appears to get angrier, he's almost shouting the lyrics. However, in the midst of the aggression are tracks like "Icarus," which is almost Keane-like with a dominant thumping piano, and the soft ballads "I Miss You" and "Dive In," which unfortunately come across as dirges rather than love songs. The album spent just one week in the charts at number 47 in February 2007 which suggested the Hours may have to rethink their strategy, but then again, it was a higher chart placing than U2's debut album.

Magik!!

Missed them at Hampden Park (Glasgow) when supporting U2 which I deeply regret!!! Before concert The Hours had been recommended so bought See The Light but now that I own Narcissus Road its defintely just as awesome!

No time to lose...let alone Hours

Saw these guys at Cardiff supporting U2 and Hours later was downloading tracks heard at the gig, particularily 'Ali' and 'Murder'.This is no ordinary band and I can't believe its taken so long for me(and obviously so many others)to catch up with them.Superbly crafted and executed songs which just get better and better every time I listen to them-'People Say' and 'Let Me Breathe' are my personal favourites but 'Back When You Were Good','Narcissus Road' and 'Icarus' are up there. If you buy Coldplay/Keane/Deacon Blue, this album will not disappoint and the good news is 'See the Light',their second album,is even better!!!!

Why oh why oh why ...

.... are these lot not filling stadiums. First caught them in the old Leftfield tent at Glastonbury in 2007 I think and loved them ever since. My children have grown up with Ali in the Jungle - it's as commonplace as twinkle twinkle little star to them .... it's only when they grow up and realise that The Hours passed most of Britain by in their youth that they will realise just how damn lucky they were to have a dad with such exceptional music taste --- rant over

Biography

Formed: 2004 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

The two core members of London band the Hours have served time in some of Britpop's popular bands of the 1990s. Antony Genn (guitar, vocals) played in Pulp and toured with Elastica, while Martin Slattery (keyboard) toured with Black Grape. Both worked with Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros. Unfortunately for Genn, his lifestyle had led to a serious drug addiction, which caused his health to deteriorate. He had hit rock bottom by 2001 but finally recovered and met Slattery while in a studio with Robbie...
