Album Review

With their 1993 debut album, New Wave, the Auteurs established themselves as one of England's best guitar bands of the early '90s. Driven by the bittersweet, ironic songwriting of Luke Haines, the band's carefully crafted, three-minute pop songs are in the vein of the Kinks, the Smiths and the Beatles, particularly the songs of George Harrison. Yet the band never sounds like imitators — they combine their influences into a signature sound, distinguished by Haines' sharp lyrics and sighing melodies.

Customer Reviews

If there was any justice in the world..

..Luke Haines would be internationally recognised as one of the greatest songwriters of modern times and this album would be in the record/CD/download collection of every home in the UK. Biting lyrics, biting riffs, oozing cool and wit and intelligence from every pore this is, in my opinion, one of the greatest records made in the last twenty years. But there is no justice. And it's a fact that most people own a Coldplay or a Travis CD. Often both.

Simply awesome

Need I say anymore, this was the blueprint for the future. Buy it, you won't be upset.

Classic

New wave was the style bible of the 90s it suffered many poor imitators but it out shone all of them. As cool as old leather jacket it mixed with venom and some of the best one liners in pop history. A star motif runs in the background dethroning our celebrity culture before we had the x factor. A classic.

While the band could blast out guitar-drenched rockers like Suede, the Auteurs came to life when they drew from the quiet side of such distinctively English guitar pop bands like the Kinks, the Smiths, and George Harrison. Luke Haines, the group's guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, wrote highly melodic pop songs that combined the airy melodies of Harrison...
