Love it!

Only The Human League could release this as a single, it's so typically Human League, it's like nothing else out there, the song is epic, I can't stop listening to it, and i'm telling everyone about it. It's been so long since The Human League were number 1, top 10 even, and this song kicks the crap out all the dross in the top 10!

I'm super excited for the new album and the Manchester gig in 3 weeks

League Heaven!

They're back, back back yeah back.
Quirky, funky, analogue, exactly what we expect from the pioneers of electronic music.

Do Not Know What To Think

I have been a huge, huge Human League fan for many, many years. What's going on with this? I feel so mixed about it, I don't know what to think. First of all - the bad - It does sound like they are going out of their way not to have a hit. The structure is all over the place - just over halfway through they decide to do something completely different - bringing in new sounds and hooks etc. and kind of ignoring what went before. And why is it almost six minutes long - this is a single isn't it? I remember when Tell Me When came out in 1994 I'm not afraid to tell you I almost had tears in my eyes as you could hear immediately what an absolute smash it was - yes I know that was also long with an unusual structure and really odd lyrics, but nothing as uncommercial as this. However, the good bits are really good - they really seem to have focussed on capturing the Human League sound that we all love - stylistically the track fits clearly within the Dare era but harking back to the pre-Dare era a little bit too - I am thinking of great tracks such as "Marianne" and "Boys and Girls". As usual, the lyrics are fantastic with the usual odd twists on the mundane that make Human League lyrics stand out - "leave your cornflakes in your freezers, leave your chocolate and your cheeses". It does feel like they are playing to the fans on this record, and perhaps that's no bad thing. The atmosphere is wonderful, the robotic vocal chanting is fantastic and the fact that the mix is left so sparse for the vocals is really the right thing to do I feel. What we need from the forthcoming album though in my opinion is smash pop crackers like "Tell Me When" and "Heart Like A Wheel", along with the fan-pleasing stuff like some of the brilliant stuff on Secrets e.g. the fantastic "Reflections". Somehow though, if this is the lead single, I don't think we are going to get the former, so here's hoping for plenty of the latter. That's me done - off to buy a money-saving multi-pack of cornflakes - one in the cupboard - two in the freezer. Thanks Phil.

Synth pop's first international superstars, the Human League were among the earliest and most innovative bands to break into the pop mainstream on a wave of synthesizers and electronic rhythms, their marriage of infectious melodies and state-of-the-art technology proving enormously influential on countless acts following in their wake.
