iTunes Review

Avenged Sevenfold’s fifth studio album is their first without drummer James “The Reverend” Sullivan, who died in 2009. Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy makes for a stellar replacement both musically and sentimentally as he was largely inspired by the talented Sullivan. Though some fans believe Nightmare to be conceptual, it plays more like a tribute album as the lyrics often touch on the subject of the band’s fallen brother — they also recorded a few of Sullivan’s songs for this project. The title-track opens with M. Shadows belting out fevered vocals like a young James Hetfield by way of the late Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. Synyster Gates’ dexterous guitar leads import the fretboard-shredding harmonic style that was forged in the fires of early ‘80s British metal, especially during the soaring melodies in the chorus of “Welcome To The Family” and all over the powerful “Danger Line.” The wistful “Buried Alive” proves that ballads can still sound tough. The bookending 11 minute epic “Save Me” goes out like a 21-gun salute to Sullivan.

RIP REV

Great Album! Absolute top quality A7X! If you love them, this is perfect Avenged and a beautiful tribute to The Rev! Must buy for anyone!!!!!

An album that will change the world....

when listening to an album you feel the peak that an album can get to is being epic but no, not A7X they have made and UBER album the whole album flows from one to the next and at least the first time should be listented to front to back. It has the pace and in your face elements that bought them to fame but now the heart and soul with the revs passing. The stand out song of course is fiction not just because of its emotional meaning but because it is like nothing you will have heard before, although its sad at first i like to think its jimmys way of telling everyone dont worry he is just resting his head, he's cool and you all carry on being great without me,however it does not overshaddow the album. the rest of the songs are some of A7X's best songs to date buried alive and victim taking a true mantle. with the anger filled god hates us smashing your brain out it covers a spectreum of emotions and is a must buy not only for A7X fans but for anyone. there is a song for everyone and every mood. This album will make you thrash you head, laugh, cry and best of all remember Jimmy in the way he would have wanted to.

Nightmare

A stunning album and a perfect tribute to the Rev. Nightmare isn't as heavy as their previous albums but it does have some outstanding songs on. I have done nothing but listen to the album none stop since i bought it and it has to be one of their best albums to date. Standout tracks are Welcome To The Family, Victim, Fiction, Natural Born Killers, Nightmare and God Hates Us.

Nightmare - superb opener for the album, nice and heavy - 9/10
Welcome To The Family - catchy, rocky and heavy, a personal favourite of mine - 10/10
Danger Line - best intro on the album, a brilliant heavy song to follow the first two tracks - 9/10
Buried Alive - the first softer tracks on the album, great solo's, great riffs and a nice beat - 9/10
Natural Born Killers - back to the heavy songs, brilliant lyrics and a brilliant chorus - 9/10
So Far Away - another softer toned track with moving lyrics, and two fantastic solo's - 9/10
God Hates Us - the heaviest song on the album, for fans of sounding the Seventh Trumpet - 10/10
Victim - a little different for A7X, but one of my favourite from the album - 10/10
Tonight The World Dies - another one of the softer toned tracks that you will like if you like Dear God or Seize The Day - 9/10
Fiction - the last song The Rev wrote before he died - 10/10
Save Me - a ten minute epic song but it never gets boring, nicely paced and outstanding from start to finish - 8/10
Lost it All - A brilliant bonus song, very intense and heavy - 8/10

The video to Nightmare is very good with the ending showing an empty drum set. A fitting tribute to the Rev.

There isn't one bad song on this album, buy this album if you love great music. Avenged Sevenfold are one of the best bands of their generation and albums like this prove it.

R.I.P James 'The Rev' Sullivan, your music will not be forgotten.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The members of metalcore outfit Avenged Sevenfold (or A7X) were still attending high school in Huntington Beach, CA, when they formed their band in 1999. Nevertheless, it didn't take long for M. Shadows (vocals), Zacky Vengeance (guitar), Synyster Gates (guitar), the Reverend (drums), and Johnny Christ (bass) to make an impression with their aggressive hybrid of metal, hard rock, and punk-pop. The band made its official debut in July 2001, releasing Sounding the Seventh Trumpet on the Good Life label...
