Album Review
After the runaway success of her charming, folksy first album, Quelqu'un M'a Dit, Carla Bruni's sophomore effort takes a more difficult route and sees her setting canonical works by such poets as Yeats and Emily Dickinson to music. The lines "Wrapping that foul body up/In as foul a rag" in Yeats' "Those Dancing Days Are Gone" are delivered almost winsomely, where in fact the word "foul" should be allowed to drag, and to weigh down the rest of the line. Metered verse cannot fit this sort of verse-verse-chorus model. Of course, an album must be judged on its musical merits, and the overall mixture of rhythm and pedal steel guitars, with a touch of harmonica here and there, is a serviceable foil to Bruni's smoky voice. Although this impersonal set of disparate poems is often set to incongruous arrangements, the doo wop piano-and-guitar jam on Dickinson's "If You Were Coming in the Fall" is a highlight, lending itself oddly well to Bruni's sauce.
Customer Reviews
Good summer music- but in a different way
This was my first listen to her, I have to admit that her really soft and simple style went straight to my heart, especially 'those dancing days are gone' Despite the album being English, she manages to create songs that have deep lyrics. They are songs that make you want to sit and listen to them . The atmosphere created by real instruments and a quality vocal is really striking. I will look forward more.
maybe not in English
I loved Carla's first album. Her voice's timbre and slow lazy fall lends itself perfectly to the French language and this is why this new album does not work. In English she sounds dreary and tired, and just not very professional either. I'm sure that if she pulled out her guitar at a dinner party and started to purr these songs in her accented English, I would be charmed. However, through a CD player, they lack depth and quickly become tedious. I searched hard for one song worth buying. I wonder if the French think similarily when she sings in their native language? I don't know, but now that this is the country of her residence, I would suggest that as soon as she goes back to singing in the gallic tongue, her ratings will soar.
one promise: weak album
I really liked Carla's first album, each song, each tune were truly outstanding: the lyrics - imaginative & full of coquetry, the music - witty and ear catching ... The second album came as a real disappointment. first of all, Carla sings in English with heavy French accent, not that it is not cute but surely the sensual and dreamy character of the first album has been entirely lost. Second, all songs seams to be repetitive,… somewhat…’second hand’, as if Carla 'translated' one of the songs from her first album, multiplied it and try to sell it on English market…weak. To not to be fully negative: Carla undoubtedly has still a beautiful voice, for only that reason I’ll give two stars.
