As the more experimental brother in Oasis, Noel Gallagher is now exploring exciting new avenues with High Flying Birds, a band as flexible as whatever a track calls for. Brass, strings, Mellotron, a choir; whatever it takes is brought to sonic perfection by Gallagher’s longtime producer Dave Sardy, who nudged Gallagher to take his demos to a real Los Angeles studio. Traces of The Kinks can be heard in the ramshackle “The Death of You and Me”, “Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks”, and “Dream On”, which revisits Ray Davies’ “Sunny Afternoon” and “Dead End Street”. There’s a grand scope to tunes like “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine” and “Everybody’s on the Run”. Where Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye stuck to Lennon-centric guitar-based rock, Noel’s insights are gentler, lusher, and completely satisfying, as the hooks of “AKA . . . What a Life!” and “If I Had a Gun . . .” make abundantly clear. The deluxe edition includes the deliciously dreamy “Let the Lord Shine a Light on Me”, the driving “The Good Rebel”, and the essential “A Simple Game of Genius”, which ranks among his best tunes.

Outstanding... Would have been nice to hear a few more new tunes other than many which in one form or another many Oasis fans will have heard before. But let that not take away from the fact that this Album features 11 tracks of bliss which confirm the older gallagher is truely one of the greatest song writters this nation has ever produced. Highlight for me was AKA Broken Arrow and Record Machine. All of them however, if your into what Noel does, or maybe even if your not, will not disapoint.

Best Of His Generation

Outstanding from start to finish, Gallagher appears to have been refreshed by the Oasis split, with a familiar sound, yet one he was unlikely to attempt with his previous band. Whilst many of these tracks will be familiar to Oasis die-hards, the newer tracks also delight, with "Dream On" and "Soldier Boys And Jesus Freaks" showing the Ray Davies leanings to Gallagher's songwriting in recent years. The production of Dave Sardy also carries the record along with few gaps nor weak points, building on the work by the pair on the final Oasis album, "Dig Out Your Soul". Gallagher has also rediscovered his love for strings on this album, another point that will no doubt bring joy to long standing Oasis fans and also casual followers, more used to the mid-nineties work of the author. Without a doubt a number one album and late contender for Album Of The Year.
