Album Review
Prog rockers Dream Theater tallied 19 years as a band with the release of Octavarium, but in listening you're apt to suspect otherwise. As a collective they remain as tight as they were on 2003's obsessively dark Train of Thought (like all music-school outfits, they've exacted an all-for-one formula that doesn't allow a single player more than his share of swagger), but a post-hardcore edge — call it a leap into 2005 — has invaded their pledge of allegiance to theatrical heavy rock. Hear it on "I Walk Beside You" and "The Answer Lies Within," both of which, at under five minutes, play like charming haikus from a band known for its epic poetry, and also on the orchestra-backed 20-plus-minute final cut, which skips around from Pink Floyd to Rush to Black Sabbath influences, stopping off every so often at a place fans of My Chemical Romance might find familiar. As with all the band's discs, guitars loom large and both doom and redemption seem no further than the next twisted verse. What's changed is Dream Theater's commitment to carrying on their reputation as underground progressive rock's classicists, and it seems well-timed.

8 out of 5
Dream Theater's 8th (geddit) studio album is another piece or pure perfect prog perfectionism. From the epic drums of The Root of All Evil, to the U2ishness of I Walk Beside You and all the way to the title track, this album delivers. Having had somewhat of a hiatus from Dream Theater following their 1995 album Awake, I got this album having secured a couple of tickets to see them on tour. Since then I have discovered 10 years of back catalogue that I am ashamed to have previously ignored and rediscovdered the classic Images and Words (and even really enjoying Awake now as well). As for this album, there are no duffers and even if the first 7 tracks were nothing but Westlife covers, the title track Octavarium is would more than make up for it. Highly recommend this album I do!
Good? No....Great? Yes!
Overall a strong album but not their best. Once again Dream Theater display their technical musicianship and superb talent but now have remade the melody which was seemingly absent in Train of Thought and only displayed their jaw-dropping talent. So, as I said, this time around their is more melody and in some parts more agression and in others a softer, more mellow feel. The Answer Lies Within is a slow, soft piano song that in my mind is absolutley stunning! I Walk Beside You is more poppy and is actully very good and catchy. These Walls is one of the best tracks that has it all - Heavy riff, then a lighter riff, strong verse, brilliant pre-chorus and a majestic chorus. The rest of the album is also strong but in some places it is evident that Dream Theater are just trying to display their thecnical talent (which is more than any other band on the planet!) Octivarium is a great song but is honestly rather boring in parts but it has all that made Dream Theater in the first place- soft, classical elements, heavy, loud elements and steaming solos from the worlds best shredder - John Petrucci. A strong buy once again from Dream Theater but certinally not their best.
Simply Fantastic
This is actually my first Dream Theater album that i have owned, and boy, am I glad i got it! At first, I was only into the first track "The Root Of All Evil", and it took me a long while to discover the wonders of the rest of this album. This is awesome progressive music, and i would recommend it to almost anyone, as the music Dream Theater write is pretty versitile. This is an excellent album, and one of my all time favourites! Really worth it!
