Looking in...

Being a fan of Starsailor since they brought out 'Love Is Here', back in 2001, it was a little disheartening to see them lose their way with the follow-up, 'Silence Is Easy'. When I heard that they were due to release another record this year, I had a nagging feeling that it would be another bunch of ballads. Imagine my surprise when 'In The Crossfire' surfaced, being their 'heaviest' (by their standards, anyway) single to date. And, just as that single surprised the hell out of me, needless to say, 'On The Outside' was a pleasant surprise; a mix of upbeat numbers (such as 'In My Blood' and 'Keep Us Together'), more angst ridden tracks ('In The Crossfire', 'Faith Hope Love' and 'Way Back Home spring to mind) and a few quiet moments ('Jeremiah' and 'I Don't Know', among others). Not once does the quality of the album drop; James Walsh's vocals are as world-weary as ever, perfectly matching the music. A brilliant return to form, and an album that, had it been their second release, might have pushed them past other similar, lesser bands, such as Keane and Coldplay.

The Star's shine and Sailors smile

Silence is Easy to me was a tremendous album and after the immense Love is Here, imagine my delight when i heard the opening track Crossfire from On the Outside. Chills down my spine, they're back, with avengance. From Crossfire to Jeremiah, i can't fault it. It seems to be music I can relate to, and to me that's important, the lyrics are superb. If you haven't seen them live then go, you'll regret it later in life. 'Awe Inspiring'

Stunning album

Just as good as their old classics with a new vibe, amazing! This album has real life and style to it, and is one you can chill to and at the same time provides happiness. Full credit to Starsailor, great album they deserve all the credit they get and more, highly recommend!

Formed: Chorley, Lancashire, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

An indie rock quartet whose debut single, "Fever," earned them the title of "Britain's best new band" in February 2001, Starsailor continue the rich lineage of Travis, Coldplay, and other anthemic pop/rock bands. Formed in Wigan by music students James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), and Ben Byrne (drums), the band went through several guitar-heavy embryonic lineups before the arrival of keyboardist Barry Westhead (keyboards) cemented its sound. Starsailor took their name from Tim Buckley's...
