Album Review

Alter Bridge aligns the original Creed lineup of guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips, and bassist Brian Marshall with vocalist Myles Kennedy, formerly of late- '90s modern rock hopefuls Mayfield Four. The resulting One Day Remains retains some Creed-isms, like Tremonti's foot-on-monitor-wedge showboating, or the thickheaded riffs that unfold smoothly into elegiac, radio-ready choruses (Creed diehards are going to love "Open Your Eyes"). But Kennedy isn't nearly as melodramatic as Scott Stapp was, and his reaching back to wail like vintage Chris Cornell fits nicely with Alter Bridge's more aggressive moments. Witness the chunky PRS shredding of "Metalingus," the Metallica influence in "Watch Your Words," or the slaves and bulldozers of pounding opener "Find the Real." Principal writers Tremonti and Kennedy don't shy away from spiritual generalizations — believing in the promise of a new day, for example, in "Burn It Down." There's also the dualistic quality of the band's name and album artwork, as well as a fold-out poster emblazoned with the title track's lyrics. "When every wound has been opened/And in this world of give and take you must have faith." This stuff muddies the line between old group and new; together with flourish-laden post-grunge pacesetters like "Broken Wings," "In Loving Memory," and "Shed My Skin," it suggests Alter Bridge is happier courting Creed's constituency than establishing the promise of its more metal side.

Good

Although this will not be considered as good as Blackbird (because it's not) this is still a very good album. Bear in mind that Myles Kennedy had not long joined thegroup before this was released and does not play guitar on it. This is why there is no dual guitar sound that Alter Bridge are now so popular for. It is perhaps more singer-songwriter based and a different Alter Bridge. There are a few standout tracks that almost reach the dizzy heights of the quality of Blackbird. These are Broken Wings, Find the Real, Open Your Eyes and Down to My Last.
Overall, One Day Remains is very good. Just remember that it came before Blackbird and has a different sound.

One Day Remains

Alter Bridge are one of the best american rock bands i have heard, probably since Creed. Three of the original members of Creed, Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall, formed the band along with the extremely talented singer Myles Kennedy and One Day Remains is the result. And it is one of the finest rock albums i have heard. Standout tracks for me are Metallingus, In Loving Memory, Find the Real, Watch Your Words and Burn It Down. If you love your rock music, and especially heavy rock/grunge, you will love this band.

Biography

Formed: January, 2004 in Orlando, FL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Alter Bridge resurrected the music-making portion of Creed. After that band's 2004 dissolution, guitarist Mark Tremonti and drummer Scott Phillips tapped ousted bassist Brian Marshall for the new project. Ex-Mayfield Four frontman Myles Kennedy was soon on board as well, and Alter Bridge made their Wind-Up debut in August 2004 with One Day Remains. Written largely by Tremonti, the record tried to lean more toward a hard rock/metal sound than the post-grunge grandstanding of his previous group. After...
