iTunes Review

London’s Hot Chip are one of the most fascinating groups of the new century. On their fourth album, the band continues to find ways to deliver the emotive intimacy with the pure blast of the dancefloor. Their beats are tight and driving. Their keyboards cut the ambience with pure kinetic electricity. But it’s lead singer Alexis Taylor, augmented by Joe Goddard, who brings the pathos to the party. “Thieves In the Night” kicks things off with a melancholic shake appended to its surging dancehall aggression. “I Feel Better” drifts into a heavenly falsetto. “One Life Stand” is a marriage proposal with a thick drum attack from Charles Hayward, Steelpans by Fimber Bravo and growling synths that sounds like the band has found the lasers in the jungle. “Slush” slows to an angelic gait where the piano and additional keys create a deep orchestral flow. “We Have Love” sails with an infectious optimism. Hot Chip bend genres to their own whims and come out bouncing.

Brilliant.

Even from the artwork, this album stands above the crowd. Refusing to employ recent pop's overused 80s synthesizer sound to death, Hot Chip have cleverly crafted a fantastic album of well-produced dance-pop songs with beautiful melodies. Not only does One Life Stand breathe fresh air into a pop scene that's turned horribly stagnant over the past twelve months, but it proves that electronic music can be just as emotional as any other genre, if not even more.

Over the course of the previous three albums, Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard have intelligently blended their spectrum-seperated voices into adorable harmonies as well as showing their respective strengths when taking lead vocals. One Life Stand is really a culmination of everything that they've learnt, picked up and been praised for vocally, with the same Hot Chip-blip-blop electronics.

Is there a Ready For The Floor? Is there an Over And Over? No, not really. No obvious stand-out single. This is much more a sum of it's parts though, this is an intelligent and consistent offering that will no doubt fly under the radar of critics and fans alike.

Well worth £7.99 though, Hot Chip fan or not.

Vigilante

Been listening to this since initial release to see if I got tired of it..... Nope! Still brilliant....

Biography

Formed: London, England

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was issued by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle — nearly subliminal — pulse-like techno beats, acoustic guitars, and plinky pianos, but the vocals were the true star of the show (no small feat in a musical climate overrun with disaffected Lou...
