Album Review

One look at the song titles and you know you're not in for any surprises ("Open Your Heart," "More Than Meets the Eye," "Ready or Not," "Never Say Die"). Still, Europe produces made-to-order lite metal with admirable craftsmanship and occasionally memorable hooks. "Superstitious" even has a disarming gospel quality. This is hard rock with all the edges sanded off. Capable lead singer Joey Tempest carries the tunes with nonthreatening panache, while Kee Marcello (who proved his virtuosity on Europe's previous by performing "Flight of the Bumblebee") provides plenty of nice guitar solos.

I remember buying this album years ago, on a special limited edition Red Cassette. Don't know where it is now, but this album is awesome if you like that sound that Europe are so famous for- catchy guitar riffs, huge keyboard solos and Joey giving it some operatic front-man stuff throughout. A seriously under-rated album that has a toe tapping tune at every turn. Definitely one for a car journey that needs livening up! Trying to decide on a favourite tune but too difficult, Coast to Coast is a bit of a drag, Ready or Not is a laugh, Tower's Callin' isn't really worht it's place in there, aside from that... ROCK ON!

Originally a progressive rock group, Europe didn't achieve any success until they reworked their sound into a bombastic yet melodic pop-metal. In their first incarnation, the Swedish band was called Force. The band — featuring core members Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), and John Leven (bass) — won a national talent contest in the early '80s, which led to a record contract. After changing their name to Europe and releasing two albums in Sweden (Europe and Wings of Tomorrow),...
