iTunes Review

Some of ’60s psychedelia’s most ominous and most joyous moments came in AM radio hits that carried a whiff of bandwagon jumping, if not outright bubblegum chewing. Austin’s Black Angels carry that tradition forward, teetering on a line between severity and silliness that recalls the Doors, the Jesus and Mary Chain and early Psychedelic Furs. Passover, though, also connects its droogish evocations of Vietnam to the warring ’00s; from “Young Men Dead” to “The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven” and “Bloodhounds on My Trail,” the record feels shadowed by action on the streets of Baghdad. The Angels lighten up, relatively, for the beer-sodden Cramps-style stomp of “Better Off Alone.” Regardless of what you make of Alex Maas’ foreboding mutters, the fuzzy, wah-wahed-drenched guitars and smacking drums will feed your head.

The Dark Lords

Wow what a band , what a great sound . Why are thease guys not better known . The last time I loved a band who were this good was Belle & Sebastian when I heard Tigermilk . Let's hope their next album is as good . I would love to hear them during a soundcheck - Elevation by Television or any Velvets tune . The Black Angels may hark to the past but they do it so well .... FANTASTIC .

One of the few good things to come out of Texas.

If you buy this record, you really must go and see them live cos thats what they're designed to be: a live band. After seeing them at Manchester Academy i was stunned. The sheer magnitude and psychedelic ambience of their work (with the singers occasional yells and screams thrown in on 'The Sniper...') was phenomenal - when live in front of you. Unfortunately, like so many other bands, the studio was unable to capture the real extent of their sound. Highlights: 'Black Grease', 'The Sniper At the Gates of Heaven' and 'The First Vietnamese War'.

The Black Angels are certainly ploughing a popular furrow, but my goodness do they do it with brilliant conviction. If you like Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Doors or The Editors, you may well fall in love with this record…
