All hail the 1980s? Well, the UK’s Keane have plugged in their retro synthesizers and written a handful of tunes (“Spiralling”, “The Lovers Are Losing”, “You Haven’t Told Me Anything”) that recall the pure synth-pop bliss of that era with lots of exaggerated productions. Keane keep a tighter grip on the production end, never allowing a reverb to swallow them. Their third album, 2008’s Perfect Symmetry, was recorded in Paris, London, and Berlin, with a variety of producers stopping by for input (Jon Brion, Stuart Price) on this self-produced excursion into a new Keane. This “new” Keane revel in the upbeat propulsion of “Better Than This” that allows singer Tom Chaplin to shriek in mock falsetto and generally play up the festive atmosphere where once brooding might have taken hold. And this all-keyboard band even adds some guitars in spots; they temper the mood a tad. The title track still swoons with a gravitas and a sense of personal mission: “I shake through the wreckage for signs of life”. The closing ballad, “Love is the End”, puts a gripping final nail into love’s endless cycle of hope and defeat.

Better than this! It sure is!
This is the eagerly anticipated third album from sussex trio Keane with their friend Jesse Quin along for the ride with his funky bass and percussion. If you are expecting another hopes and fears or under the iron sea you may well be disappointed. With Perfect Symmetry they have made a brave departure from piano, drums and vocals that have made their music famous. On this record there are many influences but especially the 80's genre of music with Tim Rice-Oxley having a field day with all his newly aquired synths! Add a bit of Bowie to the mix and you might well be getting there. Tom Chaplins vocals get better and better, soaring and much stronger than before. So my advice to you is if you have always hated Keane and dimissed them as a trio of posh boys with wimpy songs now would be a great chance to give them another chance as the boys from sussex mature into another era. Go on I dare you...
Fresh and a great comeback
After a few years out, its great to have Keane back. After a hugely successful 'Hopes and fears', 'Under the Iron Sea' didnt quite meet the expectations as what people wanted as alot of the music they produced on the second album was similar to the first. Great news for fans that loved what they did because they got more of what they wanted, but at the same time it was starting to get a bit old. Keane made a brave choice in going for something totally different for their third album. In my opinion, it is one in which may pay dividens because the album is supurb. From the very start in 'Spiralling', its funky upbeat opener is a masterclass song. At first i was very critical of this song as i wondered 'what have they done' but it grew very quickly and i now love the song. Tim has done a great job with the songs and each song is different and in different ways, makes you listen to them through and through. Love is the end is a great ending to the album. The song is similar to what they have done in the past so after a very different album, its a great way to end. Especially mid way through the song when it becomes really gripping. Overall, an album in which i hope gets the praise it deserves as it is well worth the wait because it is simply brillant. 5 Stars for me easily!!
I'm 'Playing Along' this cd 'Again and Again'!!!!!!!
This is such a good album, definately one of the best cds released this year! It just shows how talented and creative keane can be with music. They have taken 80's influences and made the music modern and keane-like! Although they have departed from hopes and fears (which i love!), I'm really liking the new sounds in this album because it is so different and refreshing than anything on the shelves at the moment. Keane have stretched muscial boundaries and took a chance with this cd...and so should you! Buy this now, you won't regret it! Download: Playing along, Again and Again, Perfect symmetry
