Album Review
The band finds a steady R&B groove reminiscent of '60s Stax house band the MG's, and, as with the MG's, it's all in the service of a big-voiced soul singer, in this case a British redhead. Features the U.S. number-one "Holding Back the Years" and the U.K. Top 20 "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)."
Customer Reviews
A forgotten gem
This is such an under-rated album.. Forget the mainstream sentimentality of later albums like "Stars", this is Simply Red when they had really had something meaningful to make music about. Its a raw, soulful album, and - whatever you might think of MH himself - a reminder of what a rare and exceptional voice the man has.
A classic
I can only agree with earlier reviews which say this is Mick Hucknall and Simply Red at their very best. I was lucky enough to see them tour during the mid to late 80's on a number of occasions, prior to commercial pop taking over, and this collection of classics is what they were all about. When asked who my favourite band is, Simply Red is always the reply, but with a caveat - pre Stars, which for me was the start of the slide. Buy this album - fabulous memories for those of us who were there!
When Mick was Great!
What a piece of music - great band, great songs and great singer. Unfortunately he chose for mainstream mediocrity when he could have had true greatness. Can't say much more about it apart from have a listen and play it loud in a smokey room!
