THIS is a special edition

Most bands would tag "special edition" on an album that has 2 extra live tracks of songs already on it but here with Gorillaz latest outing "Plastic Beach" you get a wonderful all-star album with 2 extra tracks, the Stylo music video, artwork, loads of extra videos (including promos, making of stylo, and a video to accompany every track on the album), notes, music and lyrics, and a even a fishtank game. Well worth the extra £3.

Ups and downs

The first time I heard this I was a little disappointed. A little too urban heavy, the songs too short and didn't flow right, but after a time, I have to admit it grows on you. I am a MASSIVE gorillaz fan and I have to admit it is a must have. Bringing in artists such as Mark E. Smith from the Fall (even though not enough from him on the track 'glitter freeze') and Lou Reed prove that true rock n' roll is not dead. This album is best experienced accompanied by the website and preferably the knowledge of the history/saga of the band due to it's concept nature, but in all it's a grand album to sit back to, and there are no tracks like "don't get lost in heaven" that just make you want to skip past. The bonus tracks give a feel for the development of the album and of Albarn's previous excursion with "monkey". It paints a beautiful picture of what plastic beach is all about, a rotting island made up of all the planets waste that you can just relax on, and with tracks like "superfast Jellyfish" bringing up the idea that pop tracks can still be cool, it's no wonder why this album is going to fast become a classic :)

Such a shame that this is it's final phase of the band... Will 2D ever find an escape from the dreaded bass player, will Russel ever be able to walk into a burger king and will we ever find the whereabouts of the real Noodle? All will be revealed by Murdoc's evil hand I fear :p

One word...

Brilliant.

Conceived as the first "virtual hip-hop group," Gorillaz blended the musical talents of Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Blur's Damon Albarn, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, and Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz with the arresting visuals of Jamie Hewlett, best known as the creator of the cult comic Tank Girl. Nakamura's Deltron 3030 cohorts Kid Koala and Del tha Funkee Homosapien rounded out the creative team behind the Gorillaz quartet, whose virtual members included 2-D, the cute but spacy...
