Gorillaz go to Plastic Beach

In the past 5 years, more than ever, Damon Albarn has proved what an indecisive person he is. The future of all his projects has been up in the air. Not being able to decide whether to go back to Blur, The Good, the Bad and the Queen or Gorillaz, his fans have been constantly teased. What he has released since Demon Days was the slightly disappointing Good, the Bad and the Queen album and the Monkey album which was supposed to be Gorillaz in another form. He has also performed come back concerts with Blur. Since all of this, he and Jamie Hewlett decided it is time to make a new Gorillaz album.

Demon Days set a benchmark for anything Damon Albarn would produce with Gorillaz, who are now back with a new twist to their look, their characters, their story and their sound. There are more collaborators and styles than ever – it’s been a long wait, but Plastic Beach is finally here.

Stylo, a track featuring cool singing by Albarn/2D, overpowering vocals from soul legend Bobby Womack, all of which has been successfully merged with a catchy rap from Mos Def, along with a catchy bass line, this track has it all. Superfast Jellyfish is the next single, it features Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals and De La Soul (back with Gorillaz again). It has a strong melody and beat, where it fails greatly, however, is in the lyrics, although they deliver an intelligent verbal attack on modern day culture, the cheesiness in having a song about microwavable cereals causes the song to come across as pretentious, childish and cringe worthy. The song ends with the sort of trumpet playing you will hear in a circus – a good album track, however, having it as a single appears to be throwing the band’s credibility down the drain. Rhinestone Eyes is the track which stands out for me, 80’s synths and vocals from Albarn/2D which call back to his little rap at the beginning of Feel Good Inc. It also has a girl shouting “THAT’S ELECTRIC-TRIC-TRIC-TRIC”, the description may sound annoying, but it’s ridiculously catchy. Other stand outs would include “Welcome to the World of Plastic Beach” where Snoop Dogg sets the seen for the album in a way only he could, nothing short of brilliant and “Some Kind of Nature” which sees Damon collaborate with Lou Reed. Noteworthy mentions are “On Melancholy Hill”, “Plastic Beach” (feat. Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash) and “Cloud of Unknowing” a song which features vocals from no one but Bobby Womack.

If you came here looking for tracks that surpass Feel Good Inc, you have come to the wrong place, what this album does do, however, is surpass the other two Gorillaz albums by a mile, it may not hit their peaks, but the package, particularly when listened to beginning to end, has now become Damon Albarn’s new benchmark . Does that mean it’s better than Demon Days or The Good, the Bad and the Queen? Easily, better than Parklife? Yes, even better than Parklife. Damon Albarn only gets better through age, only Lennon and McCartney have changed their style and out done themselves as consistently as this musical legend. In a nut-shell, that’s exactly what this album and the Gorillaz project has become – A Legend.

Not what it used to be!!

I am sorry to be so dramatic about this but it's not Gorillaz anymore! Compare this album to their first one, which was the best by far, and you will realize that they completely run out of ideas. They have lost their typical, genius musical touch. And FAR TOO MANY feat blah blah blah. Come on! I would definitely like to hear Gorillaz a lot more on a Gorillaz album. They are better than these rappers. It is still original, lyrically clever and unique but go back to your old ways! This is my opinion, hope I did not manage to offend anyone!

Gorillaz 3rd

as usual a good mixture of beats and colabs from some senior statesman this album will gain momentum as the others did. not sure about album of the year Knuckles, and "jkiiuyufbv" not sure if you are qualified to write music review "they have included some unknown stars like De La Soul" were you been for the last 20 years bud?
