iTunes Review

Twenty-five years and 11 studio albums and Depeche Mode still matters. Once underground/alternative masters of the dark end of the synth-pop dance floor, DM is now one of the world’s most successful electronically engineered groups. While the music world has caught up to their technologically driven impulses, it hasn’t learned how to successfully replicate the human ingenuity that powers them. You still need the trio of Gore, Gahan, and Fletcher to run the program. Playing the Angel, the follow-up to their 2001 studio release Exciter, delivers all the expectant drama that made the band favorites of introverted malcontents for three decades. Producer Ben Hiller (Blur, Doves), who admitted to not being a fan of the band’s music before working with them, pushes the group up a few beats to give them a newfound sense of urgency (“A Pain That I’m Used To,” “John the Revelator”), but the trio still drapes their crestfallen images in beautiful electronic hues (“Precious”). Dave Gahan aids main songwriter Martin Gore with three tracks of his own that fit snugly within the group’s internal angst. No amount of worldly success can temper this group’s alluring dark side.

Praising The Angel

Well its been a few years since Exciter. Time well spent? I think so. All in all, PTA is a clever mixture of the clean crisp sound of Violator mixed with the more raw elements from SOFAD, Exciter and Ultra. The start of Track 1 reminds me of The Dead of Night off the last album, Track 2 is up their with my fav DM tracks, as is Track 3. The rest complete a very complete broad multi levelled album that is gonna sound great live. Roll on March in Manchester (my 8th DM gig!). Anyway. The introduction of a new producer and a well earned rest plus Dave and Martins solo albums can only have helped. Listening to the album is a true trip through nearly all their back catalogue. Daves voice is better than ever. As usual it does Martins lyrics justice, and its good to hear Mr Gore belt out a couple as well. There are a couple of weaker songs but only marginally. Violator and SOFAD are by far the best but i would happily put Tracks 2, 3 and 5 on and DM collection. John The Revelator reminds me of Bottle Living off Paper Monsters whilst Suffer Well reminds me of Nothing of MFTM. This of course is my opinion. thank you for reading this far. Hope this helps to persuade you to at least try a few tracks and maybe expand to other ones. If your new to DM try Violator Tracks 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 Songs of Faith and Devotion Tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 10......the rest if up to you. SM 18.10.2005

Mode to joy

Ben Hillier has finally filled the big shoes of Alan Wilder who for so long meticulously crafted the unique sound of DM until his departure in 1997. The production on Ultra and Exciter was flimsy and seemed to lead Mode astray but Hillier's penchant for all things gritty and analogue re-ignites the chemistry of DM. His sound combines well with the gutsy guitars of chief songwriter Martin Gore and helps the Mode rediscover their synth roots. There are some real stadium fillers on here, not least Dave Gahan's Suffer Well - a revelation of his talents which, with Martin on vocal harmonies, is a real treat to hear. A return to form. Can't wait to see them in concert.

R.E.T.U.R.N

Well what can i say this album is Depeche Mode back to there best. Exciter was a good album but not to the standard Depeche Mode have set in the past. Precious is a breathe of fressh air and could be DM's new Enjoy The Silence. The album also features 3 songs by Singer and Lead Frontman Dave Gahan, Which do work well with Martin L.Gore's usual efforts as Gahan's style do fit Depeche Mode's traditional Mould. One thing that is clear from the album is that Depeche Mode have there enthuisiasm back for life and the music they produce.
