Album Review

English singer/songwriter Polly Scattergood's eponymous debut oozes the kind of potential that makes one forgive the occasional misstep. Her heart is firmly sewn into her sleeve, and she details the peaks, valleys, and especially the wreckage of that muscular organ in a way that only those trapped in their self-absorbed late teens and early twenties can. Less vindictive and aloof than Lily Allen, less stylized and groomed for oblivion than Amy Winehouse, but possessing both of those artists' penchant for slick, confessional, melodic pop diatribes, Scattergood embraces the early 21st century electro-dance-pop of London proper with a voice that suggests a childhood filled with endless nights spent listening to Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and Nine Inch Nails. At her best, like on the slow-burn opener "I Hate the Way," the lovelorn Xanax and sambuca anthem "Other Too Endless," and the rousing single "Nitrogen Pink," she successfully bridges the gap between teen pop and adult alternative rock, but when she gets stuck in the confessional too long ("Poem Song," "Breathe in Breathe Out"), the results are more indulgent than powerful.

Simply beautiful.

I downloaded 'Other Too Endless' as a free iTunes single of the week, and instantly fell in love with Polly Scattergood's music, and so I bought the album. And I must say, it is one of the most beautifully haunting and magical albums I have bought in a long, long time. The lyrics in the songs coupled with the incredible music is what makes the songs so incredible. My personal favourites are (in no particular order); Breathe In Breathe Out - a simply stunning and beautiful, heartwrenching song. Other Too Endless - sounds like a relatively fun song, but listen to the lyrics, and you'll see the hysteria behind the song. I Am Strong - just brilliant. Untitled 27 - haunting and beautiful. Bunny Club - the lyrics in this song are utterly fabulous. I strongly recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a music artist who is a bit different from the mainstream stuff going round at the moment. A fabulous debut album from a brilliant new talent!

Wow

Aritsts like this, are what make music, They're what make real music. Not synthetic and materialisitc rubbish. Real, down to earth, beautiful music. The lyrics are magical in their own right, anyone that likes real music, buy it. Especially Regins Spektor lovers :)

I love this.

I'm not sure why, but I love it. Kinda addictive stuff :] "Other Too Endless", "Please Don't Touch" and "I Am Strong" are my personal favourites - although they're all great tracks.

London-based Polly Scattergood blends the progressive arrangements and vocal acrobatics of Kate Bush, Björk, and Tori Amos with the indie pop sensibilities of Cat Power and Patrick Wolf, resulting in a powerful, dramatic, and volatile tonic that landed the precocious artist a deal with Mute Records at the age of 22.
