Album Review

Released as part of a Viva la Vida special edition and on its own as an EP — thereby illustrating a concern for fans that's almost unheard of among these big-budget special editions — Prospekt's March is an addendum to Coldplay's Eno-produced 2008 album, offering a little bit more of the same spacy thing. Often, it's a variation on what was on the album itself, as three of the eight songs here are remixes, none particularly different than the originals (not even Jay-Z's cameo on "Lost" feels sudden or surprising). Of those other five songs, "Postcards from Far Away" is just a small snippet of atmospheric keyboard, leaving this at a mere four tracks — all good, all holding their own with the main text of Viva la Vida. Best of these is the surging drama of "Glass of Water," which feels as if it could have fit neatly into the album itself, but "Rainy Day" has a nice percolating electronic beat along with simpatico staccato strings, and "Prospekt's March/Poppyfields" earns much of its portentousness through its latter section, all of which makes up for the slightly unfinished feel of "Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground." None of this is major but it is enjoyable, worthwhile for the devoted — and it's nice they can get it separately instead of plunking down cash yet again for a deluxe edition.

Some stunning tracks

Here goes... Life In Technicolor II - ever since hearing the preview I've been dribbling over this one. Sheer musical brilliance. 10/10 Postcards From Far Away - short but sweet. Chris should have expanded this. 8/10 Glass Of Water - classic powerhouse Coldplay, would love to hear this live. 9/10 Rainy Day - chorus lacks something, but the intro is sublime! Love the electro twist to it. 8/10 Prospekt's March - absolutely, stunningly, beautiful. I adore this song so much. 10/10 Lost+ - doomed from the start unfortunately, why can't Coldplay leave this song alone? All we needed was the original and acoustic versions, and Jay-Z's input is poor even by rap standards. 3/10 Lovers In Japan (Osaka Sun Mix) - it's not a REmix people, so don't complain that it sounds the same! I actually like this version just as much as the original. 8/10 Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground - sounds a LOT like Til Kingdom Come from X&Y. Not a bad thing at all! 8/10 Overall, a fantastic EP. I would have liked to hear a little more original material - there's a lot of unreleased songs from the Viva collection, like The Goldrush (ft. Will Champion on vocals!), Famous Old Paintings, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, etc. but what original material is included is sublime in every way.

AMAZING!

Yet again Coldplay have blown me away with their musical talent!

The Icing on the Viva la Vida cake

Chris Martin pretty much summed up the album with his comment of "...they complete the Viva la Vida picture" These songs carry the same style and excellent craftsmanship seen in the album. Essentially, they've demonstrated their new direction and style in Viva la Vida; and this is simply a "Look at what else we can do". It gels beautifully with the original album. Don't be fooled by the idea that they're B-sides: The songs are just as good as those on the album. None of the new songs feel 'weak or 'out of place' The mixes of previous songs, however, are quite bad. Lost+ hasn't had much to it. In all honesty, all they've done is got Jay-Z to add a bit of rapping over the guitar solo... aside from that, it's just Lost! all over again. Pretty disappointing. Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix) is pretty dire. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good... but is near identical to the original. Comparing the 2 a few times, the only actual difference is a couple more 'oohs' and 'ahs' and a slightly prominent drum beat. But I wouldn't justify that as a new song in its own right... Aside from those 2: Perfection So with regards to whether you should get it or not... simple: If you loved the original album (4-5 stars), then get this. I can't see why you wouldn't love it If you hate the original album, then look elsewhere. You will not find anything 'new' or to your liking here

Biography

Formed: 1998 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
