Another great recording

It is so enjoyable to be able to write rave reviews about operatic recordings. This is not everybody's favourite pucinni opera. Some say it does not have the melodic quality of other of his operas'?. This may be the case but does not alter the fact that on this recording you have artists at the peak of their profession. We all know Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of Nessun Dorma! but it is only in hearing the complete work that this wanderful aria is heard in context with the remainder of the opera. Dame Joan Sutherland as Turandot gives an absolutely memerable performance, and who can fault the ever magnificient London Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta working his usual magic. Magnificient!!!

Definitive recording

For me, this is the definitive recording of this opera. Pavarotti is of course in amazing form (and here gets to sing his sginature tune) but it has to be Sutherland in the role of the ice-queen who is the real sensation. The part of Turandot has reputedly wrecked many a soprano's voice, but Sutherland's performance leaves you in no doubt that the role is well within her reach. This ceratinly cannot be said of all recordings of Turandot. Sutherland gives it absolutely everything and its all there - softness, absolute power. Her 'In questa reggia' is surely unmatched. Caballe is also magnificent in her role as Liu. They are all backed by an amazing orchestra playing at full pelt under Mehta and the sound is brilliant - listen to the brass in 'So il tuo nome!'. I would say this recording towers above all others, including Nilsson's.

Turandot

I first heared this specific recording in about 1974 on vinyl. I still have that set but am unable to play it - no turntable! It is as fresh as it ever was. Sutherland was magnificent and the new tenor with her was a revelation. Pavarottis's timbre was printed in my brain permanently. This recording is a classic
