Album Review
As the Internet released their debut album digitally at the end of 2011, this dreamy, dark duo benefitted from their relationship with the controversial hip-hop crew Odd Future, just on mentions in the press. It's beneficial, as Purple Naked Ladies is actually a diminutive and often humble album that easily drifts into the background, even with a flippant treatment of "Cocaine" (here, a metaphor for hot sex rather than a life-ruining drug) and song titles like "Violet Nude Women" or "C*nt." Think Portishead, '80s, atmospheric Michael Mann soundtracks, sexy loft music, neo-neo-soul, and Georgia Ann Muldrow all mixed together for a new brand of trip-hop that really lives up to that genre's title. Vocalist/rapper Syd the Kyd is the perfect Odd Future siren, sounding breathy, poetic, and even caustic when she needs to, capturing the black widow spirit on the enchanting kiss-off "Web of Me," and sounding like a stoned kind of elegant on the futuristic "Fastlane." The polished and humble creations from producer Matt Martians suggest he's the Odd Future affiliate most likely to score a car commercial, but as slick and instantly gratifying as his constructions are, they're just as deep, pulling influence from everything from Timbaland to Cornelius, from Art of Noise to Blue Note. Sounds delicious, but before considering the album as a date night soundtrack, consider the Kyd's ability to deliver depravity in a Julie London style, and that the manic main character of "She Dgaf" shaves off all her hair to find freedom from "the struggles she was raised with." Still, these damaged goods and broken people are layered and their situations are worldly, things the Internet's cohorts don't often offer. Turns out Odd Future benefits greatly from this duo anchoring their wild universe, as Purple Naked Ladies is one of the collective's more sensual and sensible releases to date. File them between MellowHype and Frank Ocean, or better yet, consider this purposeful act on their own.

oh em gee
this album is brilliant ! from London <3
I love this sound
The sound is rhythmical and makes you want to listen on
Space Age R&B
The production is dynamic and crazy, blending gentle synth melodies and nice guitar flourishes with jumpy basslines. Props to Matt Martians you can hear the Jet Age influence. Syd's dreamy vocals are layered and delayed to create a really nice overall sound. Most songs have irregular structures and its nice to hear people doing things differently. Fantastic guest appearances from Mike G and Coco O along with some additional production from Left Brain make this a fantastic album. I just wish that some of the songs, like Lincoln and Love Song -1 had been developed a bit more, and the ideas in some of the songs had been streamlined a bit. Overall an album that's very different and interesting on so many levels. Great first effort.
Track by Track:
Violet Nude Women - 7/10 - Nice introduction to their sound, with backing vocals wafting over a psychedelic funk production which switches tempo from dynamic synths to easy-going guitars. I just wish that the song had been developed a little more cos it gets a little repetitive.
They Say - 9/10 - very nice melodies and a catchy tune over a stop-start drum beat. The vocals of Syd and Tay Walker harmonise really nicely and the three-part chorus is effective.
She Dgaf - 9/10 - Very nice piano chords, eery choral samples and a quivering synth line in the verse compliment Syd's harmonious vocals, before it goes into a stuttering, bass heavy chorus and outro. Standout Track.
C*** - 8/10 - Jazzy guitar chords and dynamic 808s make this a nice track. Syd's vocals could probably do with being more structured and melodious on this, though.
Cocaine - 10/10 - Incredible production on this with african percussion, woozy synths and a dynamic top synth line. The vocals also have a great melody and it segues nicely into the hidden track "Tevie", a nice jazz-inflected instrumental complete with bongo drums.
Ode to a Dream - 7/10 - The singspeak of Kilo Kish is nicely used in this track and Syd sings a relatively catchy chorus over some nice drums. The track kinda spontaneously combusts in the second half as the production turns weird and Coco O provides some cool vocal theatrics.
Gurl - Choppy drums and a nice change in the first verse by hearing Matt sing, before Syd comes in with a catchy chorus over some bubbling space age production, a nice second verse and a final rap verse from Hal (of Jet Age) slowly lowers in pitch as the track self-destructs.
Love Song -1 - 9/10 - This is a dreamy R&B track with great vocals and a fantastic neptunes-esque production. I would have liked to have seen this expanded more.
Lincoln - 10/10 - Probably my favourite track on the album. The music is beyond incredible with a stuttering guitar-synth line and soft melodic keys. The hook is catchy and well sung and the massively underrated Mike G comes in with another great verse, his laidback flow suiting the beat perfectly. I just wish it had been developed into a longer song!
Web of Me - 9.5/10 - The drums are more prominent here in a really enticing R&B song as Syd's layered vocals float over gentle synths. Lovely melody and nice lyrics.
She Knows - 6.5/10 - A very chilled track with Matt and Syd on the vocals together. A nice listen but not a standout.
Fastlane - 8.5/10 - Drums at the forefront again here over some jazzy keys. An effective double chorus and Syd's voice suits the production perfectly and the song progresses nicely, ending with a sort of blended remix.
Visions - 9.5/10 - Great vocals from Coco O and signature production style make this another standout track. Lovely guitar flourishes compliment the moody bassline really well. Another one that I would have loved to have been longer.
The Garden - 9/10 - Great way to end the album. A chilled track with a fantastic bass riff and dynamic drums as Syd repeats a couple of lines with a delayed echoey effect and this works really well with the tender synth improvisation behind.
